Subject: Naval Rebuild

Greetings and Salutations,

Sudeten has taken from us, and then taken some more. The Terran Fleet will return and return soon. Other ships have been sighted headed to the Pentagon Worlds and the Kerensky Cluster itself. When the fighting ended on sudeten, several Clans had need for facilities to rebuild with and select clans were chosen to hold these facilities in trust so that rebuilding would go faster.

Now, we need a status report of the Clan Fleet. We can not make plans without knowing the situation. Please report back to me aboard the CSRS Snow Raven with the status of your repairs and where you recieved this assistance. There is no time for delay.

On a hill several kilometers distant from the capital of Addergrad, the Khan of Clan Star Adder looked out, even from here the activity at the main and secondary SpacePorts were clearly visible, and while he could imagine he was alone, he knew he was not. One step behind him, and to his left stood his best hope for a final, or at least an extended, resolution with part of the Inner Sphere, while a full Star of Elementals and Battle Armored Infantry have taken positions around the hill at various intervals.

Shifting his gaze to the sky, Stanislav N'Buta addresses his fellow Warrior, "I asked you here this day Charlamagne for several reasons. One, I thought you would appreciate a moment of peace before I assign you a very important task. Two, to tell you in person of your new role with and for the Clan."

"I serve as needed," the former Cobra replies, "my Khan."

"Aye, that is one thing we have in common, the one real purpose of our individual lives, to serve the Clan. The Warriors, Scientists, Laborers, Techs and Merchants and their needs ahead of our own, personal dreams and ambitions," he says, followed by a heavy sigh.

Almost with a sense of remorse the Khan continues, "First you will be assigned to my personal Staff. Should I fail as Khan, and the need for a replacement come, it is you that I will see in my stead. As I served as a rallying point for the Burrocks after their Absorption, your Second duty will be to guide and integrate the Cobras into our Way. Instruct them, though be patient and firm, while they need time, time is the one luxury we no longer have."

"And lastly," the Khan locks his eyes upon the Star Colonel, "you will compose a message. A very important message, one that may cause more deaths than you will care to be responsible for, yet will hopefully give those now lost a new hope," he says as he passes a datapad.

Holding the gaze of Charlamagne, he further adds, "Contained on the pad are broad guidelines what I would like you to say and topics that need to be covered. Chose or ignore it all as you wish, but you will address billions of people that have not had any other alternative until now."

After Star Colonel Charlamagne Steiner takes the datapad, the Khan directs his attention elsewhere, but does not remain silent for long, "I wish I did not have to lay such a burden upon your shoulders. I had wanted to wait on this for another year at least, three would have been even better, unfortunately reality, fate and our own past has determined such was not meant to be, thus I make do with what I have, in the best way I can."

While the Khan speaks, Charlamagne skims the text on the pad, his eyes widen in surprise, as a feeling of disgust wells up from his gut. Charlamagne's mind though recalls one of his earliest readings, the sense of dread from that time once more rushes back, pushing the other feeling away.

"Do you believe you can convince the populace that a 31st Century, Interstellar War of The Roses would not be in their best interests? Can you persuade a portion to shift their 300 hundred year old allegiance, one that has gained them little aside from near constant warfare, to the Banner of Clan Star Adder," Stanislav N'Buta, Khan of Clan Star Adder, asks.

Charlamagne does not answer immediately, his right hand moves to the small pouch on his side, attached to his belt. His mind already putting words to a question he wishes answered, one that requires a simple aff or neg as a response.

Almost without conscious thought he draws one card from his deck, unseen and unguided his fingers walk across the edges of the cards. His nails grip one card, pulls it from the deck and pouch. His hand and arm lift the card to eye level, revealing The Emperor, a sign on its own considering the task the Khan has just asked of him. The image was upright, answering his question, and in turn, the questions of the Khan.

After a few moments of disbelief, the Star Colonel replies, "Aff my Khan, I can and will try. Though I cannot make any promises as to what the future will unveil, only that I am meant to do as you require."

A silent nod from the Khan, whose gaze has shifted in the direction to the field upon which the Lyran Assault on Addergrad, then called Somerset, took place. And even though details cannot be made out, the scars upon the surface have not yet been erased by the weather and elements, the tiny, dark shapes of shattered 'Mechs still litter the field, though from here they look to be upright ants than colossal instruments of War.

Time slips away, the sun moves across the sky, and the shadows lengthen, engulfing the two Clan Warriors. A portent of things to come...............

Loremaster Addersyn rubbed his eyes, the acute pain behind them refusing to diminish, after nearly 40 hours of near non-stop work, he really needed a break, time to relax and let his mind ponder other issues. The recent arrival and batchall by the Shark Khan for Homer, former Capital World of Clan Cloud Cobra, and his stubborn resistance at refusing to acknowledge the Trial of Absorption as legitimate frustrated Dagmar. How many other Clans feel and believe the same, how many more will shift their attentions away from the Not-Named War for a chance to pilfer from the wealth of Clan Star Adder.

It's bad enough that several cloisters are of the same bent as the Sharks, believing themselves as being persecuted by the ilKhan. They can't see that if it wasn't for the Adders, they'd be taken piecemeal by other Clans that have little to no respect for Cobra traditions and beliefs. Being part of  Clan Star Adder, they'd still retain a small portion of their identity, as it would be incorporated into his Clan, the first Clan to ever successfully Absorb two Clans.

As the highest ranking Adder in the Homeworlds, Dagmar is of the thought that he may have to force the issue with the Grand Council and the other Clans that are of the mindset of Clan Diamond Shark, being under the false belief that the Absorption of Clan Cloud Cobra was for the full Clan and all its possessions.

Absorption Trials have always been for a Clan, a Clan in full, not portions of it, and for any right minded and thinking Clan to conceive otherwise is just proof that such a Clan has been infected, either by Spheroid or Scientist conspirators. Further delving by the Adder Watch into Clan Diamond Shark may be warranted, the Mandrills, or rather those that were Mandrill, as well as the former Cobra Clan are solid evidence that the Scientists in some Clans had more influence that was their due.

Yes, as Loremaster, Dagmar will have to issue some orders for deep Intel Ops into Clan Diamond Shark and its Scientist Caste. The last such Watch Operation did not reveal much, in fact the report was the the Sharks were untouched, which Dagmar cannot believe, all other Clans had been touched by the Scientist Conspiracy to some degree. The criminals within the Sharks may just be better at hiding their tracks, but some evidence is there to be found, and if any Clan can find it, it is Clan Star Adder.

Information is the first, and most important, weapon required in order to conduct a battle....of any kind.

Charlamagne's mind was distracted, divided, much like the status of his former Clan, much like the Clans in general. He, as a true Clansman, believed the Cobra Absorption was over and done...all that was Cobra now being part of his current Clan, Clan Star Adder.

Yet there are those who still cling to their belief that the Absorption was not legal. Cloisters denying the fact that their Clan is dead, eaten away by corruption from within. Clans testing the waters, so to speak, with lame reasoning that the Absorption was not valid.

Are they so insecure, so petty and jealous of the Adder that they would pick this time, seconds after having that thought, Charlamagne knew the answer....Aff, they are, and it is that individualistic attitude that will see those Clans fade into history, unworthy of Remembrance.

And with all that is currently going on, the Not-named now known to have survived, and thrived, in the Inner Sphere, and with War, true War, just beginning. Warfare of such scale is totally alien to the Clans, and every Clan is needed to do its part if the Children of Kerensky desire to survive.

On this day though, he had to focus, for he had a task to perform for the good of his Clans, former and current. The message he was about to record was of personal importance, and would test, even gauge his ability as an orator, as a future leader of Clan Star Adder if the Khan is to have his way.

And hopefully would give him additional insight as to how he should approach the task given to him by Khan N'Buta, the audacity of his proposal borders the insane, yet seems fitting coming from the young Khan, should it work, should Charlamagne actually be able to accomplish through words what years of fighting has been unable to, the Khan's vision will be that much closer to completion, and his reputation will be second only to the Founder's, surpassing what Ulric had managed during the initial Liberation with one Warrior.

Clearing his mind, Charlamagne mentally seeks out the words which he hopes will lead those astray back upon the proper path, restore their faith in The Way, bring them into the embrace of the coils of Clan Star Adder, as the honorable victor of the Trial of Absorption for Clan Cloud Cobra.

As the holovid begins recording, out of habit he pulls out his precious Tarot Deck, and begins a reading, the camera set to capture not only his face, but the pattern as well. He speaks as the cards are revealed;

"I am Star Colonel Charlamagne Steiner of Clan Star Adder. Several years ago, as a proud Warrior of Clan Cloud Cobra I was taken as bondsman by Clan Star Adder in a Trial of Possession, since then I have followed The Way as shown to me by my Faith, the de'Nostredame Cloister, a practice virtually unchanged since my time as a proud Warrior of Clan Cloud Cobra despite being an equally proud Adder Warrior."

"I speak to all of my fellow Cobras now, past, present and future, especially those of the future. I have been told of your reluctance to view the Absorption as righteous, of your denial of what has come to pass and of your refusal to accept what must be. Those Scientists responsible for the downfall of our mutual Clan, the aloof Cloud Cobra. That is correct, I said aloof, for to long it saw itself as holier than thou, and it has paid the price, for no other penance would suffice."

"For to long the inter-cloister politicking, a microcosm of the Clans as a whole. We all thought it made us stronger, and perhaps, in the beginning it did. However, recent events have proven otherwise, for much like the fractured kindraa of Clan Fire Mandrill, eventually the positions of the cloisters and ambitions of the ecKhans, became the focus, more important than the integrity of the Clan."

"By means of those self created divisions, those splits between Castes, and differences between individual Cobras, the dezgra criminals, those possessing the same spiritual corruption as the Traitor Lords, and Not-Named, gained undue influence and control of Clan Cloud Cobra."

"Now while many have been caught, and killed, during their misguided attempt at a coup d'etat, seeking to wrest overall control of all the Clans, many more are still unaccounted for. Free to poison the minds of those who believe they are more important than they are. They are still amongst you, amongst those who were once Mandrill, and still amongst all of Kerensky's Clans. Hiding, lying in wait, shielding themselves in shadows, knowing that time favors them so long as they remain silent."

"They, like the Not-Named, will strike when all of us are once more distracted and divided, operating under the belief that next time things will be different. I say there can be no next time, for the old ways are what have led us to this point, have allowed them to sunder the once mighty Cloud Cobra Clan, turning Laborer against Laborer, Warrior against Warrior, turning the entire Clan upon itself, causing it to feed upon its own flesh."

Cards continue to be lain upon the table, the configuration one of unusual complexity, and very rarely used, for those who do see this, and know the Ways of the de'Nostredame Cloister, will recognize it as a Destiny Reading. Such are hard to do, requiring decades of practice and understanding of the ways of tarot, being done but in extreme circumstances, and even then the outcome is even more rarely something that the querent truly sought to learn, being entirely opposite of his stated desire and wishes.

"I, like you, will mourn the passing of Clan Cloud Cobra. For centuries it was held in high esteem, even though often misunderstood, by the Clans. The Cobra influenced them all, as evidenced by the cloisters amongst them, but now, by its own inattentiveness, those same cloisters with suspicion and distrust. Some having been outright disbanded and outlawed because of the divisiveness the system creates, its members cast to the furthest reaches of a Clan's territory, or killed outright due to blind fear."

"To remain true to itself, its members, and its legacy, Clan Cloud Cobra must evolve, become more than just a single Clan with many heads, hearts and minds. It must set aside that which has been shown as failure. It must entwine its future with another lest its memories fade, and unite those hearts and minds once more, becoming one Clan controlled by one, visionary and enlightened head. A time of testing has befallen it, tests will assail those who carry the Spirit of the Cobra, and most will fail, their faith being insufficient...."

Charlamagne's voice changes, its pitch and tone becoming detached, monotone yet passionate, directed at none in particular, yet aimed at just one specifically, as many who hear and see the message will claim later. Only in less than a dozen instances has such been legitimately verified as happening, where a member of a cloister has in actuality connected with The Way, speaking on behalf of, and for, the Universe.

"Those who refuse to see beyond the Cloud will surely fall to earth, crushed under heathen Spheres, despoiled by the Unnamed, and lost from all Remembrance. To honor the Cobra, to honor The Way, one must honor all, respect all, yet place the Whole above any one, so look to the Stars."

"A Trial will be the Sign, through defeat the Cobra will become greater than itself. Add yourselves, your Faith, your Way to those who follow the Stars. Absorb amongst yourselves the Future Way, the past teaches much, but it is Dead."

"Look up above the Cloud to be shown the Way of the Future, for the Stars shall guide. The Wisdom of the Cobra shall be embraced, enhanced and balanced by the respect and honor shown by the Stars. Those of weak Faith, without Honor, without Vision, shall descend into Darkness, forever lost amongst the Forgotten and Corrupt."

Being totally unaware of what had just happened, Charlamagne continues his oration, "...thus I implore those Cobras who are still true to the teachings of their Clan, of the Great General and his son the Founder, look to your Faith, your true Faith, and become one with Clan Star Adder. The diversity of its citizens, its Castes, and the mutual respect they give one another, is what makes the Whole greater than the sum of its parts. It is the Unity we have all striven for since the Founding, yet the majority only offer lip service to, preferring to maintain the status quo and their own, personal and individual ascendency, as they forsake the very ideals and goals upon which all Clans are descended from. The first, and True Star League!"

A few keystrokes later, and Charlamagne's video was sent streaming across hundreds of light years. And under standing order of the Star Adder Watch it was reviewed at every HPG station, with nearly every witness experiencing a surge of pride, not of him or herself, but of and for the Clan. Their wants, needs, dreams and desires they now knew would be fulfilled, but only if the Clan's was met first.

For in order for all individuals to benefit, Clan Star Adder would have benefit as a whole. If one Caste were to suffer, then the others will feel the same, much like how when a pebble is thrown into a calm pond, eventually those waves reach the shore, as its entire volume is affected by just one small disturbance.

Several take it upon themselves to relay the Star Colonel's message under higher priorities, not caring about the consequences they may endure (none are chastised or punished for their initiative, most being commended after the fact) in order to ensure that the message reaches its intended destination that much sooner. And instead of weeks later, it is mere days before it reaches the worlds of Home, Babylon, and all other worlds once claimed by Clan Cloud Cobra.

In cases it is literally broadcast only to one person, who then passes to another, or others, the process repeating itself hundreds of thousands, millions, of times. It takes time, possibly to much time, but eventually it is viewed by every person who claims to be of Clan Cloud Cobra, whether that claim is past or present, each person is then forced to examine his place, his status, and that of Clan Cloud Cobra, and for many it is the most difficult task they have had to undertake in their lives, and the decision they make is one that they will have to live with for its remainder, for this is the ultimate test of Faith for them.

Will they pass or fail............

Turning his attention back to the persons in his office, Khan N'Buta addresses him companions, "So you were saying about the issues with the tainted Legaices?"

Cassius and the IS Scientist adKhan look at their Khan in amazement, as the few comments they made to each other on that topic was said in low tones so as not to interfere with his addressing the Grand Council, though IS Intelligence Adjutant Adderson has gotten used to his protege's quirks, some more useful than others, simply repeats what was said, "Not so much tainted as mixed with comparable genes. So while those scientists that were part of the Conspiracy did commit a crime, they sought to improve our Bloodlines using samples that would minimize inherent flaws in Adder Lines."

Nervously, the adKhan adds, "Ye-ye-yes Sir. One of the few things we have determined is that even with the tampering, those that were tampered with was done so in an attempt to compliment the traits common to a particular strain."

"An example please," asks the Khan.

"We-we-well," the adKhan stammers, though before he answers the Khan further adds, "Mine, tell me if my genetics carry traces common to a Clan not the Star Adder."

Going pale, his hands clenching the arms of his chair the adKhan swallows, "We-well, if you're sure you wish to know. Gran-gran-granted you put yourself at the top of the list, bu-bu-but I hon-hon-honestly didn't think I-I-I'd have to inform you so soon Sir."

"No need to fret my friend," Stanislav says as he pours the man a glass of water, "take a moment and calm your nerves. I asked so that I would know, which I will pass to the rest of the Clan regardless of what you tell me. I will not hold you responsible if the news is not what I have hoped for. I am not a Smoke Jaguar after all, of that much I am positive."

Taking the glass in his trembling hands, he move the liquid to his lips, taking deep swallows in a vain attempt to regain his composure, not stopping until the water is drained. Placing the glass back upon the Khan's desk, he inhales deeply, releasing the breath in one massive burst as he relays the information that was requested.

"Your genetics are not pure Adder," he begins, the Khan not looking to surprised at this revelation, "we've identified markers linking you to the Clans of Cloud Cobra, Burrock prior to their Absorption, Steel Viper, Nova...er, Spirit Cat and Ghost Bear."

The adKhan was shocked at the reaction of the Khan, he actually smiled, not that I have an idea smirk, but a genuine smile. His smile is the kind that denotes satisfaction and pleasure, even Paladin Adderson was confused at Stanislav's demeanor.

"If I did not know you better," Cassius says, with more than a bit of disgust at hearing that his Khan is not pure "I would guess you are pleased at the results," he adds with a note of sarcasm.

"Why should I not be friend," Stanislav says, his voice also carrying the timber of happiness, "I have just been given information that I hope will pull this Clan, the whole Clan together in a way it has never been."

Both men are now even more confused than before, and it shows on their faces, though Cassius leans back in his chair as he knows his Khan will soon inform him as to the why of that statement, the adKhan however just stares blankly.

"We have amongst our people at least three factions, all of which still cling to their own identity to various degrees. The core and majority being those that have been raised as Star Adders, those that still cling to their Burrock heritage, and now Clan Cloud Cobra, even though a number still refuse to recognize our successful Absorption."

"I have just been informed that I am of all three of those differing personalities, and hopefully the better qualities of them and the others. You told me earlier that in the eyes, minds and hearts of many, I, reluctantly, am Clan Star Adder. Well now I can be Burrock or Cobra as well. I will acknowledge all parts of Clan Star Adder by the acceptance that I am also Burrock, Cobra, Viper, Bear and Cat. By being seen as each separate piece of the puzzle that Clan Star Adder has become, I can rearrange those pieces unto that unified picture that has frustrated us since the Burrock Absorption."

Still beaming, Khan N'Buta continues, "As you know, Clan Star Adder has been a strong proponent for inter-Clan cooperation and Unity. Can you think of a better way to embody that philosophy than to actually be it," he asks, though both men sense the questin is more rhetorical than one he expects answered.

"In a few weeks, I will address the Clan. I will admit to them that I was touched by the Conspiracy, years before it was revealed. And while the actions of a few is still reprehensible, we do not have to allow it to affect who and what we are. We can learn from it, just as we learn from every experience, ours and others, and make ourselves better than we were. That is one of Clan Star Adder's greatest strengths, a trait that only Clan Wolf can boast of being our equal."

"We have always taken what works for one Clan and made it our own, now we will be sorely tested at proving that to ourselves," Stanislav says with resolve, "Inform those of your people that know and urge them to refrain from spreading the details. This is something that must come from me. By showing, no, by being unconcerned, retaining a air of confidence of surety in myself and my actions, then those who are also of mixed blood shall we say, will see that they too have nothing to fear or worry over. Once more I will set the example," he says with a sigh, "I will show by my actions that I am more than just an amalgamation of genetics, it will be my deeds that ultimately will be judged, not the makeup of the man."

The two Clansmen, one a native Clanner, the other an adoptee IS native, finally understand what the Khan is saying. In a sense the Clan itself can be thought of as a Living Being; with the Castes, mixed and pure Bloodlines, Absorbed Clans and IS natives each being a segment of its DNA.

And as crazy as it may sound, it will work for Clan Star Adder...the other Clans will likely not be so successful should they attempt the same. Their mindsets are overall to rigid, to narrow to conceive of trying to use this incident to their advantage, a few, very few, will try the same, and will have some success, but compared to Clan Star Adder, they will be but imitations, poor ones at that.

EcKhan Odinsson Eaker, after having overseen the relocation of those few cloisters that had remained loyal to Clan Cloud Cobra to the worlds of the Tanis System finally had a few moments to himself. And though he has been out of the loop, he still has some resources left within the other cloisters, and they kept him apprised of current events on Homer, Babylon, and the other former Cobra Holding within Clan Space, as well as the still defiant cloisters that continue to revolt against the outcome of the Absorption. While having ill feelings against the victors is understandable, the Clan way is to accept and earn a new place amongst them. Clan Cloud Cobra was betrayed from within, and judged by the actions, as well as the inaction, of those few.

Odinsson may agree with the feelings of those who still refute the ilKhans decree regarding the Fate of the Cobra, however had those who still believed in the Clan, the Way and the Founder fought for Clan Cloud Cobra, instead of for the perverse ideas that had poisoned their minds, a venom as toxic as that which consumed the original Star League and those who still claim to be House Lords, then perhaps his former Clan would have persevered and been the victor.

But no, they believed that a new order, one led by intellect and logic would be more viable than that of ability, and the knowledge of what it truly requires in order to maintain the tenuous hold of life on the Homeworlds. The sacrifices, the pain and suffering, the lack of so much that is taken for granted in the Inner Sphere. The House Lords have long coveted the title of First Lord, and no true Clansman wants that title. To restore a Star League, one that actually followed the tenets and philosophies of the Original is their goal, and those with the vision, wisdom and charisma to see their Clan bring about that creation become Khan, though again, not for the desire of that Rank, but for the freedom it allows them to guide their Clan along that treacherous road.

To many have been lost along it already, of twenty Clans, only 9 of the original remain. Two have changed names due to outside influences, while another, one fractured by the same turmoil as his own former Clan, has remade and relabeled what remained of the original. Yet another still claims the name of one of the 20, yet under various Khans has undergone more changes than the Clan as a whole, and cannot be considered the same Clan as it was. Those that are left, are no more, with Cloud Cobra and Fire Mandrill but the newest Clans to be added to the roles of those who have failed to demonstrate their right to survive.

Once more Odinsson Eaker is filled with regrets over the fall of the Clan that was his, so much that he again contemplates resigning his position as an ecKhan and requesting reassignment to either a solahma unit or position as a Caretaker/Mentor for a sibko. His belief in himself has been sorely diminished, no longer can he be sure, despite what Khan N'Buta told him during their conference, that what he believes to be best for his people to actually be in their best interests. In his mind, the proof lies in those that still claim to belong to Clan Cloud Cobra.

If they are so faithful, why did they not rise up to challenge the him when, during his brief tenure as Khan, he Abjured those cloisters that had deserted the Clan in its most trying time? Why did they not voice their distaste and act upon it when the ilKhan called for their Absorption? Where were they when it came time to fight against Clan Star Adder to prevent being Absorbed?

In answering those questions, Odinsson Eaker gained some insight to those that failed to preserve that which they claimed loyalty to. They acted as, and now behave as, cowards, unable to admit to themselves that what they did was wrong, they cling to the only thing that was right in their lives. Sheer desperation drives them now to hold onto the past as they hope for a future. The false prophets that lead them, led them astray, now voice words of defiance. Issuing their own decrees more than likely that call for resistance, believing that if they can hold out long enough that the Adder Khans and the ilKhan will have a change of opinion.

Odinsson laughs lightly at that, ilKhan Pryde is possessed by the same stubbornness so inherent to that Bloodline, while Khan Stasnislav N'Buta, in spite of being more reasonable than she, has his own agenda, one that has the near unconditional backing of his entire Clan. Yes, he, ecKhan Odinsson Eaker has read the N'Buta Manifesto, and like many, found most of the ideas presented within as outrageous, yet so much of what he proposes makes sense, and in conjunction with the success Clan Star Adder has experienced since his becoming a Khan, it is nigh impossible to refute the fact that his vision is coming to pass, more quickly in some respects than others, but still, their long string of victories, of their ability to bring together differing groups, the unparalleled acceptance they have gained between themselves and the civilians of those Inner Sphere worlds they now control, and the friendship of one of the major Periphery States indicates that Clan Star Adder is on the right path......

Odinsson Eaker, as the eldest ecKhan of Clan Star Adder and before that Clan Cloud Cobra, still felt the need to attempt, at least one more time, to convince those that were Abjured to move beyond what has happened. To realize that Clan Cloud Cobra is dead, part of a greater whole, he sees and understands so much more now, part of that being his reading of Stanislav's journal, he doesn't like the term manifesto, while his own contemplations and reviews of what had occurred within his former Clan.

So much was overlooked, or outright ignored, by so many people, including himself, that he now knew it was only a matter of time before the Conspiracy was either uncovered or totally subverted Clan Cloud Cobra. The Scientists, all those involved, had seriously underestimated how much the Watch of Clan Star Adder had improved since it had discovered the Dark Caste connection within Clan Burrock. Its abilities still amaze Odinsson, and is just another sign that times have changed, that the Clan have changed, whether it is for the better remains to be seen, though in his opinion, Clan Star Adder is the best equipped to adapt to those changes with minimal impact upon what it means to be Clan.

Should this fail, ecKhan Eaker is well aware that those who still claim to follow the Way of the Cobra will likely face extinction, and as things are now, with so few remaining true, that their loss will diminish all that survive, possible damaging the reputation and honor of those cloisters that haven't been purged from the other Clans.

With a sense of finality, he commences the recording of a message that will be delivered, first by HPG, then by those in place in the 'rebel' cloisters, eventually he hopes reaching the eyes and ears of their ecKhans. The odds of him being successful are extremely slim, but as his last act he will make the ultimate sacrifice, not only for his current Clan, but for the honor of his former Clan, Clan Cloud Cobra. For a change, the political acumen of being an ecKhan will serve more than the interest of his cloister, it'll bring together those that it helped divide.

"I am ecKhan Odinsson Eaker of the As'tru Cloister of Clan Star Adder, formerly of Clan Cloud Cobra, the last Khan of Clan Cloud Cobra wish to speak to you all who still fight under the name of that once proud, noble and honorable Clan. Friends, peers, even my enemies I ask, nay, I implore you to reconsider your current path. I know you still view yourselves as Cobra, for I do as well, but the time of the Cobra has ended. My acts as Khan were the final nail in the coffin that all of us helped construct. Our own divided nature, akin to that that of the Fire Mandrill kindraa, was instrumental to our downfall. While it was what united us in the beginning, soon our separate beliefs and views of The Way became our weakness. Instead of keeping our Clan focused on its path, it led us to many forks in that path, with each cloister taking the path it deemed best, and then channeling its energies into putting the whole Clan along that path. What we forgot was that all paths are part of The Way, and so lost our Collective Way."

"Our bickering and attempts at placing our respective cloisters, our personal needs, ahead of the Clan is what allowed the insurgent Scientists to gain a foothold within our Clan. It was our collective inattention to the Universe around us that permitted them to corrupt so many of us, all Clans suffered from this deficiency, some more than others as events have revealed unto us."

"During my thankfully brief tenure as Khan I did what I had to do in order to preserve what was left of the Clan, to keep the casualties to a minimum. Had the infighting continued it would have put what remained of Clan Cloud Cobra at the brink of Annihilation. No honor would have remained, our very existence would have been erased from Clan history for the acts some were committing under the banner of Clan Cloud Cobra. I refused to let that happen, and while the outcome is not ideal, it is considerably better than the alternative. Absorption was, and is, the best means of our survival. It allows us to continue, to be an influence on future generations, to guide another Clan along its path, its Way."

"So while it is not the Way of the Cobra, it is still the Way of the Clans, the Way of the Adder is noble. It is visionary. It is the future. No other Clan has the respect for the cloister as they, no other Clan will give you equal treatment as they, no Clan will give you the chance to redeem the name and honor of Clan Cloud Cobra as they."

"Clan Star Adder, thru their Khan, Stanislav N'Buta, has earned my respect. In return I have pledged my own, as well as my honor. And to fulfill that honor I ask of you to take your place once more within the Clans of Kerensky, accept the Absorption for what it represents, a second chance to fulfill the dream of the Founder. A second chance to accomplish what the Great Father could not. Become one with Clan Star Adder and you will get the chance to see, to do, what they could not, the formation of the True Star League will be within your grasp."

"I ask this of you, not only as a fellow Cobra, but as a Clan Warrior. As my surkai to those that believe I betrayed them when I called for their Abjuration I can offer but two things. A brief explanation, I did what I deemed necessary to preserve the Clan as best I could. And this," a ballistic pistol is revealed to be in his hand when her presses the barrel against his temple, "as surkai and incentive to honor the Clan we all called Cloud Cobra as we knew it, not what it became. I offer my life so that you may continue yours with honor. My life for the life for Clan Cloud Cobra, may my blood be the last that is shed of those who still cling to their faith. May my last breath be the breath of a new life for those who join with Clan Star Adder. May my last words be ones of hope in this time of despair."

And with that pronouncement, ecKhan Odinsson Eaker squeezes the trigger. The large caliber, explosive round erupts from the barrel, the sound of its exit coinciding with the bullet blowing out the left side of his head in a spray of blood, bone and brain matter.

The last image of Odinsson Eaker is that of a man at peace with himself at last, eyes closed and a small smile of satisfaction upon his lips.

Seconds after the discharge, the automated timing present by the ecKhan compiles, then sends the message to the planetary HPG Station. After a review by Adder Watch operative, who also was one of those who fought in the Absorption on the side of Clan Cloud Cobra, it is sent along at highest priority. The operative sheds tears over her fallen superior, but has hope that the last of the Cobras will be reunited with their kin, a silent godspeed by her is sent on the winds of prayer and faith to bring the soul of the man she briefly called Khan, her genefather is at last at rest.

Within hours, the last message of the last Khan of Clan Cloud Cobra reaches Homer, Babylon, and the other Holdings still being held by those that have been labeled 'rebel' by the Star Adder Military Command, now only time will tell if the ecKhans of those cloisters will listen, or die believing that they are still in the right....

Dagmar is tired, when the HW Watch informed him of ecKhan Eaker's last HPG message and its destination, he was enraged, his office still bearing the scars of his outburst. However, as satisfying and cathartic as it was, it accomplished little of any worth.

He ranted and raved throughout the entire ordeal, using some very un-Clanlike vernacular, interspersed with contractions and Inner Sphere derogatory comments about Odinsson's parentage, personal life and the like. Now though, he resented every word he uttered, Odinsson did what he did in an attempt to heal the wounds that the Cobras has suffered due to the fragmenting initiated by the Scientist Conspiracy.

Still, that he felt that he couldn't come to the Loremaster to express his thoughts and fears still left Dagmar with a heavy heart and bitter taste in the back of his throat. Dagmar feels older than he ever has, all the supposed wisdom, patience and insight comes with a price, a rather steep one he now knows. That price being witness to changes beyond his control or influence, the deaths of friends, the loss of those of like mind and beliefs. The price is the feeling of being alone in a sea of humanity that cannot relate to one's circumstances.

The messenger that brought him the news has stabilized, bearing the immediate brunt of Dagmar's tantrum, three broken ribs, compound fracture to left arm, dislocated shoulder, broken nose, right ear nearly severed and a concussion. Even though many will now likely speak of his possible emotional instability, none would dare claim that he has lost his Warrior's Edge after seeing the limp, unconscious and bleeding form of the Watch operative being carried out on a stretcher.

Once he calmed down, Dagmar Addersyn contacted Roland Turgidson, the Intelligence Adjutant and Watch Commander for Clan Star Adder within the Clan Homeworlds, offering his apologies for the damage done to his subordinate, as well as adding an order to accompany ecKhan Odinsson Eaker's final appeal to the members of his former Clan, any who laid down their arms and openly declared for Clan Star Adder, fought against Clan Diamond Shark as well as those who still resisted were to be offered immediate acceptance into Clan Star Adder at their previous Rank and Caste once the rebellion is crushed.

They would be questioned, their backgrounds delved into and scoured for any possible evidence linking them to the Scientist Conspiracy should they survive the conflict with the Sharks and more fanatical rebels. Far to much has occurred, to many lies and deception uncovered for anyone to be accept blindly, and if those who shift their allegiance to Clan star Adder seriously believe otherwise, then they have really fallen far from the Way of the Clans. Faith is one thing, but stupidity has never been an Adder trait, and any who still exhibit that trait will be put out of their misery and Clan Star Adder's membership......permanently.

Succumbing to his lethargy, Dagmar Addersyn finally makes his way to his bed chamber, the final though on his mind before he falls into slumber is for ecKhan Odinsson Eaker, I hope your Faith in your former Clansmen is not misplaced. May your Faith have finally led you to your rightful reward, and your Way lead those currently lost back into the Light that is Clan Star Adder.

With their enemies running before them, Louis and Vinh had little enough to do but watch the news from the Homeworlds.  Louis was perticularly intrested in the Cobra absorbtion.  "Your friends in the Watch seem to be very presuasive.  They have gotten to the Cobras fairly well, and it looks as if they have produced quite the PR campaign."

"So it would seem," Vinh replied.  "Then again, they got to many of us."

"You and I, Vinh?  It would seem they got us both."

"Louis, you know to what I refer," Vinh knew he was playing dumb, or at least she hoped he was.  He had too keen a mind not to be, she thought. "Our old Clan, the Burrocks.  Look at how many of our leaders they won over, inspite of the orders our Khan gave to fight on."

"I followed thouse orders, remember" Louis reminded her.  "Who ever my Khan is, I follow their orders.  And I think had I not had to use an infighting veriant of my little Stormcrow, I might not have overheated and been taken alive."

For a brief moment, Vinh was moved. "I am glad you were, Louis," she said softly to her friend.  Then in a harsher tone, "if not, who would remind me all the things I wish to avoid in life?"

"Such as honor, loyalty, millitary prowess?" Louis shot back.

"Yes, thouse things." Vinh smiled.  "Once a Burrock, always a Burrock."

Excerpt from the personal journal of Stanislav N'buta

Once more the Grand Council's attention has been diverted from our Test, that is how I still view this War with the Not-Named, a Test of our adaptability, of our resolve to the Dream of Kerensky, both of them, and the desire to see it fulfilled.

Now while I agree that Amy Lynn's new Clan needs to be validated, there is a time and place for such, and now is not the time. The very survival of our society is dependent on the outcome of the War, for should we fail in the Inner Sphere, the Powers arrayed against us there will, of this I have no doubt, once more send an even greater force than what was constituted Operation Serpent to the Homeworlds, their task to obliterate every last piece and person that still follows the Way of Keresnsky.

Sadly, I have come to believe that we have been venerating the wrong Kerensky. No mistake that Nicholas deserves some recognition, but that so many have elevated him to Deific status makes his hold upon the hearts and minds of the other Khans a difficult binding to undo. Yes he pulled together the disparate factions, and yes he created the foundations for what we are today, and yes for the time we were isolated from our origins, those ways served us well.

Now, at this time however, such concrete adherence to those doctrines and dogmas is more a hindrance. As a Militocracy we Clans should be well aware and know the true meaning of the saying "no plan survives contact with the enemy", but that can be easily modified to "no culture survive contact with other cultures". I sincerely hope that others within the more adamant Clans are insightful enough to realize that the minute we came across the Outbound Light, our way of life as we knew it then was over.

Every decision made since that time has altered us, changed us in small ways, with each change having a ripple effect upon us all. Though unlike a pond that has been disturbed, we cannot go back to the way we were. To do so would be an admittance that we were weak, not worthy of continuing, that we failed in our charge of restoring a Star League more in line with the ideals of the Original.

Giving up is the one thing Nicholas instilled in our Founders that I intend to adhere to without question, mayhaps even blindly, however I will do so in my way, according to my feelings and what I see as best for my Clan. I do, however, intend to mold Clan Star Adder into something more reminiscent of the Star League Defense Force as it was under General Aleksander Kerensky, again though I will do my utmost to ensure that we are not a copy, for even though it did end the tyranny of Amaris, it was all to often used as a tool for the Corrupt House Lords in their dreams of conquest and greed. How to accomplish that I do not know, for if it cannot be done during my tenure as Khan, whoever follows me may decide to undo all that I have done up to this point, making all my dreams moot and actions meaningless.

Perhaps I will have to see that a copy of this journal is left somewhere, so that he or she can read of my thoughts and plans, much as how my earlier journals have become something of a Bible to many within the Clan, especially the lower Castes, which I consider a positive. It has galvanized so many within the Clan and drawn it together so that it more closely resembles what it was during those early years.

Naturally there are those who are against the changes I have wrought, there always will be naysayers and detractors, one advantage to being a semi-student of human psychology is the awareness that there will always be a group, or groups, that have other ideas that they believe are more legitimate, more traditional, or more effective. Fortunately though they tend to be small and unorganized...most of the time, as the Scientist Conspiracy proved.

While I can admire their dedication to their mission, for it must have been in place for decades, their timing left much to be desired, then again from their point of view it was near perfect. From the reports most were hardliners or the inexperienced, and thus easily impressionable and led astray. It is probably fortuitous that I was Khan at the time and not another, the mindset of most of my predecessors would have led to an evisceration of the Scientist Caste.

Had that happened it would have been only a matter of time before Clan Star Adder died, followed shortly thereafter by the deaths, the Annihilation, of all other Clans. Without our ability to gather information and plan long term based on that information, and change plans as more details are uncovered, the most ardent and vehement Crusading Clan will fall under the combined firepower of the Not-Named and their House Lord Pets just that much sooner.

Our tenuous alliance with the Magistracy is still high on my list of priorities, first though the Clan must end the standoff with the rebel Cobras and the opportunistic Sharks. Once that is concluded, a new Galaxy will be formed, correction, a reinforced Galaxy in a sense, for it will be the first that will be based on the Paragon concept. It will still be comprised of Stars, though the number of points comprising that Star will change. For the next step in our evolution, I intend to use the number six for the Paragon Galaxy, with six points to a Star, and cooperation instilled from the outset.

Starting at the sibco level every Warrior trainee will be paired, at a minimum, with another, every individual will be taught that in order for one to succeed, all must...if one fails, then all fail. The Whole will be greater than the sum of its parts, and while that has long been the philosophy of Clan Star Adder, it has fallen into disuse. If it the last thing I accomplish, the reaffirmation of that philosophy, with a firmer, more tangible practice of it, then I will consider my time as Khan worthwhile.

I will end this entry stating that I am still confident that the Clans will finally unite, in a way never seen before. I just may need to push them in the right direction by another "off the wall" proposal. One that Nicholas never planned for, thought or dreamed of, one that there is no current means to argue against exist. The only question is to whom do I make the proposal to so that it will not jeopardize the Clan, the War, and the Dream. I know who I would like to make the offer to, but that would likely get me executed, I can only push so far, so fast, and that would be over the line.

I suppose I will have to watch and listen, pay attention to the way a person speaks and what is left unsaid, observe the nuances of their body and what they do as they speak. Hopefully by doing so someone will reveal themselves as being open to such a radical idea...in other words, I will have to wait and see, with the added hope that they will reveal themselves sooner rather than later....

Stanislav N'Buta was deep in thought as he reviewed the latest Intelligence reports from the various Fronts, some dispatches from Adder Watch Operatives throughout Clan Territory, when one report caught his attention. The point of origin code marked as coming from the Southern Periphery, and the news brought a smile to his face, well this will certainly make things more interesting for us, though if I can convince the Council to make another attempt at Operation Pilgrim, I think I can persuade them to allow him to retain his Rank. We will need someone with the authority to make binding decisions. However, I suppose I should tell Tobias, and knowing him he will prefer to fight for the position, a proxy will...

Before he could finish that particular train of thought, his intercom tugged him back into reality, "My Khan," it was Rosaleen, his assistant, "IA Adderson is," as she said his name, Cassius burst into the Khan's office, his normally pinched and stressed features relaxed, bringing back a youthful appearance to his face, which bore a huge, toothy smile.

"Stanislav," he begins, seemingly his elation has overridden his normally firm emotional control, "Word from our forces engaged in our counter-offensive against the Terrans along our Periphey Border." Stanislav is greatly intrigued, for his friend, mentor and confidant to bring any news in person is highly unusual, let alone neglecting to his his Rank. Internally Stanislav is pleased with this shift in attitude, even though it is likely only temporary. It shows the Khan that his friend is capable of joy.

Smiling in return, "Well out with Cassius, the suspense is killing me. Especially considering that you normally do not make a habit of playing newsboy," he says ending with a small chuckle.

"Well...ummm....", not used to feeling flustered, Cassius Adderson quickly regains his composure before continuing. Stanislav does notice that the indicator light for the intercom goes off, causing him to furrow his brow, "Khan N'Buta, Clan Star Adder forces have had great success in pushing the Terrans off all worlds that they had invaded a few months ago, and while we did suffer some significant damage, the Terrans have suffered far, far worse. And I am not referring to simply the loss of men and 'Mechs," he states as he passes a datapad to the Khan.

Stanislav takes the pad, his curiousity highly aroused. Yes the news of victory is always welcome, Stanislav fears there will soon be a time when such will be rare, but what he reads was nothing even close to what he was expecting. To be honest it was something he had never even imagined, and he too feels what Cassius was likely experiencing when he first arrived.

"And the identity has been confirmed," the Khan asks, "Confirmed beyond any doubt or question, quiaff."

"Aff Khan N'buta, the identity has been confirmed via genetic testing," the Intelligence Adjutant replies, "and there is more, keep reading my Khan."

Stanislav does as the Watch Director suggests, he reads more, his eyes widening, "I want that machine brought here NOW. Replicate its schematics, I want three teams of cleared Scientists and Techs to work on reverse engineering those components if possible, spare no expense. One on Xagyg, one on Tanis and the last here on Addergrad. And am Overwatch Team to double check their findings" he nearly mumbles the last words as he brings up holo-maps of all Adder Territories, "Total isolation for all teams with triple security measures," he adds nonchalantly, the Conspiracy still fresh in his mind, and as far as he is concerned, it hasn't been fully eliminated from his Clan, nor the others.

"Now where do you think we should establish our Technical Overwatch Operations," he asks to Cassius, who moves closer to the Khan's desk so as to more clearly see the displays, "If things had worked out differently, here would have been ideal," he says as he highlights a former Adder world.

Cassius stares at the area, "I like this one," another world brightens, "sadly it, nor any of these others, are in our possession. We will have to remedy that soon," Cassius says, a slight feral grin pulling at the corners of his mouth.

Stanislav nods in agreement, inspiration lifting his spirits, "Here then," one final world brightens, concern coloring Cassius' voice as he replies, "Is that not a bit dangerous. That world is exposed and vulnerable."

"True, true, but would you expect such a planet to be the home of any important project," the Khan says, "Besides, I think that it would be a fitting tribute to that bastard for the world that brought his downfall to be the home of this particular project."

Frowning, Cassius has to speak his mind and feelings, "Under usual, or even unusual, circumstances I would normally agree, but now is neither. I understand your desire, well not really, but that is irrelevant. The Project I can see the need for, though considering its importance and sensitivity it needs to be in a secure locale. Perhaps for the time being a Project World can wait until the other teams have something that can be used, and during the intervening time we can occasionally review candidates for a Base," Cassius developing a bit of concern for the Khan, for it would normally be he who would suggest such a course.

"You are right friend," the Khan says, "It is good to see you thinking. Though waiting may not be necessary. I believe we can find suitable accommodations there," as he points to a world, "I can think of no better way than to put the labs that have caused us so much trouble to us to work for us."

Cassius, realizing that the Khan has tested him in a way, simply shakes his head, chuckling as he speaks, "Once more my Khan, you have gotten the better of me, and I can see the wisdom in your idea. What better way to cleanse the evil that was birthed on that world than to have it house the construction of the means to destroy another."

"Now that we have that decided, it is time to toast the skill and fortune of our Warriors," he remarks as he opens the link to Rosaleen, "what would you like friend?"

The two Clan Warriors place their respective requests which is shortly filled and delivered by the Khan's demure assistant, though before she leaves, Stanislav says to her, "We will talk later Rosaleen to discuss your inappropriate behavior earlier."

"Ye-ye-yes Sir, my Khan," she replies with some trepidation, now knowing that she had been caught at eavesdropping. Once she departs, Stanislav and Cassius then sit and offer up words of respect to the Warriors that their Clan has lost, and the deed that they have accomplished.

It is some hours later before the Watch Director leaves, and not long after that Rosaleen is called into the Khan's office....

Their unit largely left out of the offensive one again, held in reserve against future Terran attacks, Louis had little to do but assist Vinh in running her intel reports.  It was a laborious process for him, pouring over the pages, looking for details that warented some attention.  She usualy tried to send detailed combat reports his way; Vinh was a skillful warrior, to be sure, and constantly tested as a Star Captian by the basis of her skill, she rairly led warriors in battle and was not as well versed in small unit tactics.  Louis didn't mind, of course, since the reports were often good reading, and he'd been known to steal a trick or two from another warrior by reading about it.  So when Vinh turned to him to ask about something she saw, it was little supprise.

"Louis, look at this," she handed him a data pad with battle resualts on it. "How reasonable is it that a lone Archer could have defeated a Binary of omnimechs?"

Louis raised his eyebrows slightly.  "What sort of Archer?  What sort of omnimechs?  What unit?"

"Looks like elements from Kappa." Vinh's eyes scanned the report more closely, scouring her memory as to the names. "I think I recognize a few of these warriors from your old unit.  Decent troops with experiance against the Inner Sphere.  Against an Archer W, they should have had little trouble.  Stravag, freebirths and sibkids should have had little trouble."

"I hope the pilot was made a bondsmen, then.  Seems to have known his stuff.  Though with a record like that, he would likely see front line action before we do."

"Stravag, that is the truth, quineg."  Vinh read on.  "Neg, pilot was killed in the action.  Uniform identifies him as being a General in rank, and elementals performing salvage noted his apperant age only as being 'old.'"  The watch agent scratched her head.  "On site genetic test indicates Clan Wolf heritage."

"Bandits?" Louis asked, refrencing the hated Exiles.

"I would guess a decendant of the Dragoons," Vinh offered. "Seems to be a generation removed from being trueborn, while the bandits still use the iron womb.  Though they use testing as well, so its likely he was one of their better warriors at that rank."

"Most likely, though to be that sharp even past his prime.  Even the Black Widow or Jamie Wolf could hardly..." Louis' voice trailed off and Vinh's eyes widened as it dawned on them what they had uncovered.  "We need to get more genetic testing."

"I will contact the archives on Strana Mechty.  The Wolves should still have samples on file from that mission."

"Aff.  And I will inform our Loremaster.  This may be worthy of recognition..."

It's times like this where Khan N'Buta is glad that the majority of Clan WarShips carry internal HPG's, in addition to other assests not so well known. When he received word from Bruce Dickenson, the Star Adder Ambassador to the Magistracy of Canopus, the news frightened him, even more than the revelation of the Not-Named still surviving did.

Tharkad nuked, the Archon and Estates General most probably dead, their atoms now drifting down upon the entire landscape of the planet. He quickly convened an emergency gathering of the Clan Council and informed them of the event, all were outraged and shocked.

First the application of nuclear weaponry in the Homeworlds by dissident elements from within the Clans, and now this. Heated debates rose regarding whether the Adders themselves should prepare themselves for the possibility that they too would be a target, and how to respond if such were to happen. More than a few called for the Clan itself to break out their own small cache of weapons, to which the Khan vehemently opposed such a move, his supporters lending their voices. Soon the Council broke into smaller factions, each strong in its convictions.

Khan N'Buta had no other recourse than to table the talk on nuclear arms until a later time, right now he declared, they need to determine a course of action to save as many worlds of the crumbling Lyran Commonwealth, to which he laid out the details of what he and Carlamagne Steiner had discussed some months ago.

At the mention of his name, Charlamagne stood, all eyes directed to him, and at a gesture by the Khan, he moved down to the dais and for the first time in his life, he addressed the full Council of Clan Star Adder.

"My Khan and kin," he began, "here," he states as he holds up a data disk, "I have composed a message to the Lyran people. Originally it was intended for the Archon himself, though in light of the news delivered here today I had to make many changes, so pardon its haphazard dialogue."

He then places the disk into a holo-player, presses the play icon, watching and listening to his words alongside his fellow Bloodnamed of his Clan.

A few minutes later, in his quiet manner, he once more speaks to the Council, "There was much more I wanted to say, much more I would like to assure the people of, but time is no longer on our side. If we mean to shield the civilians of the Inner Sphere," he sighs deeply, "this may be our last, best hope for convincing them that their future, as well as our own, are intertwined."

"What say you, do we offer those who are desperate salvation? Do we extend a glimmer of hope and a chance at a future to those who have and see none? Do we act in accordance to the dictates of General Kerensky of the Star League Defense Force, our own principles, and move to defend those who cannot defend themselves? Or do we betray all that we stand for and simply sit back as innocents are slaughtered indiscriminately?"

The Khan then stands, moves to the side of the Warrior, "Fellow Star Adders, I chose Charlamagne for this task partially due to his name. For a persons name does hold power, we know this as we venerate the name of Kerensky. We live this as evidenced by our practice of awarding Bloodnames. To the people of the Commonwealth, the name Steiner has power. If by using that name to prevent the unnecessary death of millions, then I will use that power."

"Fortunately for me, this Warrior has a like outlook and agreed to serve as my surrogate to the Lyran people. Many will see this as un-Clanlike, and perhaps it is. However it is inhuman to allow such wanton destruction without trying to prevent it when one has the ability to do just that. We, Clan Star Adder, have that ability, neg, that responsibility to all civilians who have the desire to remove themselves from under the unenlightened and selfish rule of their Inner Sphere Overlords."

"This action will allow our forces to show the average person that we are different than what they have been led to believe. Through fear they have been lied to, the fear of their leaders having been fostered upon their subjects in order to preserve their status. Let us give the citizens of the Lyran Commonwealth another option, let us give them a voice amongst ourselves, let us give them Charlamagne Steiner of Clan Star Adder as their new Archon. What say you?"

Seconds tick by, glares and furrowed brows fill the Hall and monitors, then one Bloodnamed stands, "I say aff," he shouts. She is quickly followed by another, then another, within minutes most of the Warriors which compose the Adder Clan Council having expressed their support for this hair-brained idea of their Khan's, and when asked even he admits it was a longshot, having a very slim chance of actually succeeding. They, like he, believe though that it worth the effort, for if it does manage to work, they will effectively absorb all of, or at least a sizable portion, the Lyran Nation, saving it from exploding into scores of nuclear fueled fireballs.

"I can't belive you voted for that nonsense," Vinh commented to Louis after the council meeting ajourned.

"Let Charlamagne carry on with this, if he wishes.  If the people of the Inner Sphere wise up and realise what is best for them, then so much the better for them.  If not, then what is difrent from now?"

"And that fact that we let a crazy old Cobra speak for our Clan?"

"He is an Adder now, Vinh.  You are, too, you know.  And as a loyal member of our Clan, he will conform to the will of the Clan, if called upon."

"And if not?  If he goes rouge, or if he should succeede and become the stravag Archon and his head becomes overly large?"

"Then we will kill him.  We are warriors quiaff?  It is our way.  One would think that you of all people who not be opposed to a bit of assassination from time to time."

"Sometimes Louis, I think intelegance should be a prerequsit for voting in council."

"Win a bloodname, then."  They were always at one another.  It kept them sharp, Louis thought, as was the Clan way.  And, the make up sex was good.

Another meeting in the Khan's office, the video link for the Grand Council off, and the audio set to broadcast so the Khan could keep an ear on the proceedings. Cassius had never considered doing the same, to him it just seemed, and still does, inappropriate.

Stanislav though was not Cassius, which has been a boon to Clan Star Adder. Of the original Invading Clans, only the Bears hold more territory, though they have not been exposed to as many Spheroid Nations as the Adders, well that is until recently anyways. Only the Adders took the initiative and actively sought contact with the far Periphery, and is still the only one with that interest as far as the Intelligence Adjutant was aware.

The Khan was sitting opposite Cassius on the other side of his desk, reading text messages from Mahone and Arluna. If it wasn't for Clan WarShips in those systems, and other, there would be no communication with Inner Sphere worlds, all thanks to the Interdiction placed by ComStar. Cassius is well aware of what the Khan is reading, his position allows him to screen any and all messages bound for the Khan.

"So Cassius," Stanislav asks, "we both have been duped it seems by one Adam Steiner."

"Aff, it seems so my Khan," the former Adder Khan answers, "we suspected he could have survived the Battle of Addergrad, though our belief was that he was still here, somewhere, as there are undoubtedly those who still support him."

The Khan has a thoughtful look, "I wonder if they would still be supportive if they knew he betrayed every ideal he professed to possess when he fought Clan Jade Falcon as part of the Somerset Strikers?"

Knowing where the Khan is going, Cassius offers, "Most would likely denounce him, others though would still remain. I shall increase efforts to ferret out sleeper cells, while you will request a copy of the INN broadcast to be forwarded from Mahone or Arluna no doubt."

"You know me well friend," Stanslav comments, "I intend just that. Of course there is always the possibility that more than a few will join that were not part of the Lyran Rebels, but the majority will be disgusted, I hope, and turn away from not only hum, but from the Lyran Commonwealth as well, finally embracing the Clan way of life."

The Khan looks his friend in the eye, Cassius' hands placed over the stylized Adder head of his cane, a finger caressing and tracing the fangs, "And what is your opinion of this secession of worlds form the Lyran State. As the Consul on Arluna said, I am inclined to honor their neutrality, so long as they do not impede our forces, and allow us to establish Enclaves on each. A strong security contingent in place as well," his eyes shine as that smile comes to the fore, "after all, they have been having some serious problems with bandits, and we have to be able to defend ourselves," the unsaid statement of if not them as well also in the mind of the Adder's Watch Director.

"Overall," Cassius says with some hesitation, "I am inclined to agree. I would prefer to take those worlds for the Clan, but the history of Kowloon tells me that they would be more of a hindrance at this time than a benefit. Better to let them have their way, and realize though experience that they cannot go it alone, or as part of a small collective of backwater worlds with little to no support," his attitude shifting into one of confidence as he speaks.

"By the way Stanislav," the use of his proper name being their mutual agreed upon way to turn a conversation from formal to informal, "why are you so interested in the worlds along the Periphery Border of the Lyran, or former Lyran, Commonwealth?"

That smile becomes more pronounced at the question posed, "Have you ever looked at the worlds we control, and their historical commonality, Cassius?"

"Neg, I can say that I have not."

"Apollo, Somerset, Von Strang's World, and the rest were all once part of the Rim World's Republic," Stanislav says, "and with the rise of Rowe's neo-variant still a threat, I thought it would be best to pull them all back together under our direct control. Mainly to thwart Daphne, but also to finally cleanse the taint of Amaris from the lot of them by giving them something positive to work towards. A means to atone for the sins of the past so to speak, by being given a direction and purpose. That purpose being the defeat of the Not-Named Puppeteers inside and outside the Terran Hegemony."

Cassius Adderson feels embarrassed, even during his tenure as Khan he had never given much thought to the past, other than that which he was told. His association with Stanislav had given him an interest, but then again, it was still limited in its scope. Honestly, it is doubtful that any of the other Clan Khan's had even pondered much beyond what planet to attack next, or who insulted whom and how would the Trial be fought.

As Inner Sphere Intelligence Adjutant of Clan Star Adder, Cassius has spent his days looking for threats to his Clan, form within and without, and until now that has been enough. The Khan's idea however has told him something of himself, looking for enemies is all well and good, but the Clan will also need friends in the future.

Few of the other Clans can truly be called allies, at least not permanent, long term ones. Of the ones that had that rare distinction, one has been Absorbed by his Clan, one has had a radical shift in attitude, one is still reeling from concentrated attacks by the Terrans, and the last has merged with another Realm.

A mental image of Clan Star Adder accomplishing the same comes to mind, a massive undertaking to be sure, and if it ever happens it would cast all other Clans in the shadow of the Adder. A Realm stretching from one side of the Inner Sphere's Periphery around to the other, with only the Horse Alliance preventing total encirclement. That image brings to his face a smile, a predatory smile that usually only his direct subordinates witness.

"Ha ha ha," the Khan laughs, "I see by your expression you are starting to see what I see, what I envision, for our Clan. Let the others have the interior and Terra, I prefer to be the one that observes them all and their futile positioning to become the ilClan. In the end, it will be our patience and willingness to learn from their mistakes that will ensure our rightful ascension."

A genuine, and less animalistic, smile replaces the other, "Once more you prove to me that you are able to see further, more broadly and consistently than I ever could. I was a good Warrior Khan, but you are the superior Clan Khan. And so long as I believe you serve the Clan, you will have my support."

"Thank you friend Cassius, that is all that I honestly want from any who follow me. Well that, and to tell me when I make a mistake, so I do not repeat it."

"I will be one of the first Stanislav, on that you can count," Cassius states, part promise, part threat, "Now however, I must return to my duties, just as I know you must. Until tomorrow," at that Cassius Adderson stands, salutes and walks to the door, finally remembering to use the cane just before he leaves the room. Outside, at her desk, the Khan's assistant, Rosaleen kneels, her torso strapped to a metal rod keeping her upright as her legs bound together at ankle and knee just behind the rod. Cassius had long ago ceased asking about the purpose, each time he was simply told it was punishment for some transgression she committed.

Once Cassius has left, Stanislav, of the N'Buta Bloodline, Khan of Clan Star Adder, sends two missives. One to Charlamagne, telling him to prepare for a journey to Arluna, the other to the Adder Consul on the same world to address the Committee and to be ready for Charlamagne's arrival. While Charlamagne will serve as the Clan's representative, the Consul will be the advisor, this due to his direct experience, knowledge and interactions with the Duchess and locals. And finally to expect further directives from the Watch Director, being as how he is an operative of the Clan Watch.

"So, they've reformed a Watch," Louis remarked to Vinh over breakfast.  "Going to sign up?"

"Not on your life.  It was a cluster fornication last time, and it will be again.  Cassius sent Lan Nghien, from spc ops."

"I don't know her," Louis replied, trying to think, "do I?"

"Lan is a he, actualy, and no.  Former Lyran spy, converted to the cause pretty fanaticaly.  Good at his work, but pretty narrow in focus."  Vinh's voice was nutral, and her face impassive.  Signs of her skill, Louis supposed, wondering how she really felt.

"I though Lan was a girls' name," he probed.  She'd told him that innocent qustions often lead to meaningful answers, since they didn't put people on guard.

"It is, usualy.  I do not know how they do things on the world this Lan is from."

"Perhaps it is not his real name? All you spys seem to have Vietnamese names, these days.  Perhaps because of Kowloon?"

"If so, he would make a poor agent, if he could not even be bothered to select a gender appropreate name.  Personaly, I like very simple, one sylable local names for under cover work, and exotic names for suduction." So she didn't like him, Louis concluded.  "Jasmine works well with most Lyrans."  Vinh said it in her most sensual voice, to the point where Louis actualy shivered.  He knew she could back it up, as well.

"Does it now?  And what would my spy name be, Jasmine?" Louis asked playfuly.

Vinh thought.  "Flounder," she replied.  "Fits you to a T."

Addergrad
The Khan's Arcade
Location: classified

As Khan, Stanislav does not see as much combat as he would like, and in the past his opinion of simulators was like many other Warriors. They were nothing more than games for the masses, a virtual reality for them to immerse themselves into so as to live as something they could never be.

However, as a recruitment tool, a way to keep skills sharp, at least after some modifications by Clan Techs were made, and by his recommendation made so long ago, they have on more than one occasion allowed him to escape, even temporarily, the stresses of life as a Clan Khan.

And on this day he has managed not only to get some time of his own in, he has the added company of Cassius Adderson, the Intelligence Adjutant for Clan Star Adder in the Inner Sphere, more commonly referred to as the Watch Director. In addition, Charlamagne Steiner, Warrior of Clan Star Adder as well as one of the many claimants to the Archonship of the Lyran Commonwealth, and Warrior Hedy, the Clan Warrior who was chosen from random from those posted on Addergrad to be part of today's simulator run, engage in a scenario designed to promote teamwork and cooperation.

The typical mindset of a Clan Warrior is one of superiority, being better one on one than any single Inner Sphere Warrior, and in that they would be right. Times though have changed, nearly gone are the Single Warrior Trials of the past, the present is now of mass armies facing off against one another, a time of Soldiers reigning supreme on the modern battlefield. And with exercises such as these, and more involving live training, Clan Star Adder has undertaking the task of transforming its Warriors into Soldiers.

The Clan still practices the traditions of its past, but in order to be relevant in the future, its Warriors need to be more flexible and open to non-standard, non-Clan, alternatives when it comes to Warfare. As many have learned, Warfare is an entirely different animal when compared to engaging in a Trial.

Having worked, and fought, together on many occasions, the Khan and the Director have taken the role of the OpFor, teamed against Charlamagne and Hedy, who are in the role of Clan Star Adder. Today's session will serve to reveal the success or failure of the Clan's current training doctrine, and thus far, the two Clanners have given as good as they've got.

Even in the midst of combat, simulated or not, the Warriors are showing that they are capable of multitasking, carrying on a conversation even as they are tossed about and basted in their own sweat as they pilot their electron manifested OmniMechs.

"So Charlamagne, of what mind are you over the news that several worlds are willing to back your claim to the Lyran Throne," Cassius says to taunt his foe of the moment, "one of which is of considerable significance and prestige."

Charlamagne fails to be baited, though the IA's maneuvering prevents him from getting a solid target lock, only a few of his shots impact, and even then only with a minimum of damage, his verbal reply is short and to the point, "My mind is clear, as is my path. The Khan asked, the cards foretold, I simply do what is best for the Clan."

Hedy listens mainly, being privy to such words is more of an honor than she feels she deserves, and to fight beside, or against as the case may be, is most definitely more. Should she die tomorrow, she would be satisfied with her life, even so, the Khan attempts to get her opinion, "Hedy, you show much promise, you have adapted our new tactics better than most," he says as he guides his Blood Asp through the air with the skill of a Pilot, "What is your thoughts on the idea of an Adder Archon," his large pulse lasers bracketing her machine's torso, one bolt going internal but not damaging anything vital or sensitive.

Leaning her Timber Wolf forward slightly and shifting her stance left, she is able to prevent from falling, a certain death when facing the Khan's skill, she takes her time in forming her answer, launching a full spread of missiles form her launchers, watching as most fail to contact the Khan. A few though shatter plates over his left leg, causing him to stumble slightly upon landing, "I think it has more merit than most want to admit. If I remember rightly, Clan Wolf took one world during the initial invasion with one Warrior, and from what I have heard today, there are at least four willing to ruled by Clan Star Adder."

Impacts upon her rear armor cause her to pause, the Watch Director having come from behind to deliver a salvo from his ultra class autocannon, fortunately it was of the lightest variety, so the damage wasn't severe...yet, made her realize she had last track of him, while the Khan moved to harass her partner. Pivoting on one foot and twisting her torso to speed acquisition, she squeezes the trigger just as her targeting reticle flashes gold, sending her own AC burst into the right arm of the Mech no more than 60 meters distant, splashes of putrid green fluid indicating a heat sink being hit, evidence of her accuracy and instinct.

She adds further, over the cursing of Cassius Adderson, "While many Warriors will complain about not being able to fight for those few worlds, the Inner Sphere is host to scores more. I believe there will more than enough fighting to quell them, maybe even they will regret such premature words."

Hedy's reactions are just a millisecond faster than the Watch Director's, allowing her to line up and fire off a quartet of laser blasts at him, and even though two are heavy mediums, with their inherent accuracy issues, when they hit, they hit hard. And this is one of those instances, the concentrated beams of laser energy both lay waste to he damaged arm, stripping and melting away the last of the armor and critically damaging the skeletal structure. The large lasers mounted above them sadly go high and to further to the right.

Cassius, silent as his machine is ravaged from the younger Warrior's fire, focuses on her, patient in the placing of his targeting systems over the heart of her Mech. The loss of his arm and the weapons mounted there giving him the ability to fire all the weaponry that remains to him without fear of overheating. Which is precisely what he does, dual UAC2's let rip hundreds of rounds of lead, the PPC lending its own hellish energy to the onslaught, and the trio of medium pulses cast out darts of scarlet.

The lances of light hit first, well most of them, the PPC bolt burns a furrow in the ground at Hedy's feet, stopping several meters short of its target. Meanwhile the lasers pockmark and burn rivulets along the left torso. Much to the surprise of both Warriors, it is the UAC's that do the most damage in a sense, multiple shells blasting away armor from the head, spider webbing the cockpit canopy, and sending a jolt of feedback into the skull of Hedy, her vision blurring for a few seconds, and for the rest of the short combat, haloing everything with a reddish tinge.

The Khan returns to pull her attention away from the Adjutant, his opponent some distance away, giving the Director ample time to remove himself from her line of sight. Back and forth, the two pair of Warriors trading opponents repeatedly before Charlamagne and Hedy manage to catch the Khan in a crossfire, blowing out the engine of the Asp, after that it was only a matter of time before the fight concluded.

More words were shared about the soon to become, at least hopefully, Clan worlds, the known and the unknown, and how to progress should a large number choose Clan membership over continued absentee and uncaring Lyran or Star League guidance. Once the four were out of their simpods, they retired to the Khan's office to discuss the exercise and partake of liquid refreshment, served by the attentive and docile assistant of the Khan's, young Rosaleen.

Charlamagne Steiner read the report forwarded by Watch Agents on Arluna and Kowloon, and while the information is a little over a week old, the details have left him speechless. The Watch Director, Cassius Adderson, truly sympathizes with the young man, the Khan's presence being required elsewhere, thus why the Adder-sponsored Archon-Designate is meeting with him instead. Also present is the new Inner Sphere Logistical Adjutant, former saKhan Macleod Connery, long thought killed during the naval battle with the Marian Hegemony, attending via HPG relay out of Gillfillan's Gold.

Macleod choosing the position rather than challenging Tobias for the position. His recent experiences giving him a new appreciation for the need of a clear chain of supplies, as well as learning of what has occurred during his "death" the distraction provided by such a Trial would be detrimental to the War effort and his Clan.

"Congratulations Charlamagne," Macleod offers, the others echoing the statement, and while Charlamagne feels proud of this accomplishment, the scope is beyond his ability to understand. For decades the Lyran Nation has done damn near everything in its power to push Clan Star Adder off the worlds that were once part of it, now they are willing to follow him, and through him the Clan. Granted that is what he asked of them, but then he only expect one or two, maybe up to half a dozen systems to take the offer. Thirty one systems, two of them very prominent, Coventry and Alarion, reveals just how desperate the citizens of those worlds must really feel.

Cassius takes up the role of advisor for the Warrior, "Charlamagne," he begins, "the Khan has placed a great deal of responsibility upon your shoulders, and while you may believe you are not prepared for it, I know he has every confidence that you are. He has cleared you to request what you feel you will need in order to secure the area and lead the people in the name of Clan Star Adder. In a sense, you will be his Regent as well as the Archon-Designate in the eyes of the people who have chosen, of their own free will, to follow you."

"Once you have decided upon where you will place your capital, Macleod will join you, to serve as needed. The forces under his command will be at your disposal, along with as much as the Clan can spare. Technicians are already boarding DropShips in preparation for repairing or rebuilding the HPG's. Warriors, Merchants, Laborers, and loyal Scientists are asking to be part of your cadre."

Macleod adds, "Your fame has spread far. First your deeds during the Mothball Trials, then this. Everyone, young and old, native Clan or native Spheroid, they all want to be on the same path as you. I have requests from half the fleet, and I do not doubt that the other Adjutants have near identical piling up on their desks."

"In less than one month," Cassius comments, "you have doubled the territory of Clan Star Adder within the Inner Sphere. You have become a great Warrior amongst all the Clans, making friends and enemies, more of the latter I am afraid, with yet more to appear once word of your singular achievement reaches the others."

"The best advice I, or any other can give you is the same I gave to Khan N'Buta when he was nominated for saKhan, be yourself, be true to yourself, and do for the people. I lost track of the first two during my reign as Khan, I refused to acknowledge that I had changed when I was told. Do not let that happen to you, if a subordinate points such out, listen, then reflect, before reacting. Just because someone says something you do not like, it does not make it any less true."

Once more Macleod injects his own voice into the conversation, "For the most part, you will be on your own. The War must still be our primary focus, but the Clan will spare all that it can for you."

"Aye," says Cassius, "that it will. Before you reach your domain though, the Khan wants you to go to Arluna and address the Committee there. The leader of the Union of Independent Worlds has requested support against the Rim Worlds Republic, and you are to offer them that support. Also, a number of Techs will remain behind in an attempt to get their HPG's operational, and then either begin training their own people in the running and maintaining of them, or acting as staff, with the Clan being their provider over ComStar."

"How you decide to support the UIW in their vendetta against Adam and Daphne is entirely up to you," the former saKhan adds, "though in my opinion, with the resources you will have at your command, open and direct would be best. Such a move will further endear the UIW with the Clan, and may just be the final step needed to get them to join as well, without the need for a prolonged guerrilla war that would inevitably result from any attempted invasion, or Trial for that matter."

Charlamagne sits quietly, listening, still in shock over what has happened, still trying to wrap his mind around what he has done, the only words he can call forth are the ones that come from his heart, "I serve the Clan."

Nodding, Cassius addresses the Adder Warrior, perhaps for the last time in person, "The Khan knows this, and has full faith in you. Though now it is time for you to gather your gear and board, you leave for the UIW within the hour, then you are off to the newest worlds in the Clan's collective."

Rising from the chair slowly, almost as if he's reluctant to undertake the quest before him, he doesn't pause though, the cards told him that this was his destiny. His Khan asked it of him as a favor, not an order, a favor, he cannot back out now...

After he leaves, Cassius and Macleod  exchange a few words, mostly over their respective confidence in Charlamagne, his place in the history of the Clan, the advancement of Clan Star Adder, and other topics. Before cutting the link, Cassius expresses one final emotion to the distant Warrior, "It is good to have you back Macleod. The Khan was deeply affected by the loss suffered, and still carries a great deal of guilt."

"Aye, I am glad to be back to, being dead is not at all what I expected," the two share a laugh, before Cassius adds, "It was a surprise to us both when your message of the reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated arrived, the relief on the Khan's face was clearly visible, and I swear his features youthened by ten years after reading it."

"Take care of the boy, he is as idealistic as the Khan, and even more eccentric. You are going to have to act as his foundation, his Loremaster even to some degree in order to ensure that he does not stray."

Macleod frowns, "You are getting paranoid Cassius."

"It is my job to be paranoid," Cassius replies, "the Conspiracy revealed just how vulnerable and blind we are as to waht occurs within ourselves. It is not a mistake I will repeat, the Clan got lucky, and I do not believe we will have that kind of luck again should there be a repeat."

"Aff," says Macleod, "Do not worry Spymaster," he says teasingly, "I will look after young Charlamagne."

At that the Adder Spymaster disconnects the two, then proceeds to review the loyalty reports on those that have been granted permission or ordered to accompany Archon-Designate Steiner. All have already been given clearance, but a thrid look through can not hurt.

Forty seven minutes later, another DropShip lifts off, heading for the assembled JumpShips far above the world of Addergrad, several more follow, but that one carries the hope of not one, but two Nations...Clan Star Adder and approximately one fourth of the all but defunct Lyran Commonwealth.

Ngo Industries Customer Service branch, Coventry...

"...the question I have, is just this: Are you going to honour the contract, or not?"  Darren Vu asked, "I don't think the new Landlord here is going to be taking kindly to welching on a deal just because the government's changed hands-now Coventry Metal Works has a fifteen year service contract on those pico-scale electron mills, and you're late by four months on payments both for the original units, and on the service contract."

Tom Bradford shrugged, "What're you going to do, challenge me for it?" he asked.

"I might...but I think you'll find that aligning with a Clan, they don't like it when someone tries to screw their subcontractors and uses politics to justify it." Vu said, "Remember, the UIW has a state of good relations with Clan Star Adder, which means your new boss.  Now I might not figure my own hand against yours in a fight, but I'd put a Coast Guard Marine up against your best bully-boys and come out better than even money on the bet, and you know it.  You're behind four months payments on those mills, Mister Bradford, we're not a charity and I know the Clans don't like people vacating contract just because they don't want to pay...so you think about it, then you think twice on it, then think again for a third time...and pay your fucking debts, you're a Noble for Christ's sake."

Charlamagne Steiner has become a reluctant celebrity amongst his peers, even those of higher rank have extended more than a small amount of praise for his swaying nearly one fourth of the Lyran Commonwealth over to Clan Star Adder, and no matter how much he protested, no matter how many times he stated that he was just acting in accordance to Khan N'Buta's request, he has been given the credit and accolades. The last time he spoke with the Khan, Charlamagne noticed an odd look in his eyes, and now he realizes what it was. It was sympathy, Charlamagne recalls the time when one Stanislav became the media darling, to use an Inner Sphere term, of the Clan. Now that role has been thrust onto another, "Though why could it have been someone, anyone, else," Charlamagne ponders.

The DropShip has been docked and locked with its parent JumpShip for a little more than an hour, during that time Charlamagne had called a meeting of those whom he chose to serve as his senior advisors, many had volunteered for this duty, so many that it became necessary to cull the numbers down quite a bit, otherwise the Clan and all aspects of it would have suffered. Charlamagne is roused from his private melancholy by a voice, a voice that intrudes with some insistence upon his conscious mind, "Penny for your thoughts Star Colonel," says Warrior Nash, the last survivor of his Star from the Mothball Trials.

The look of confusion on Charlamagne's face tells the older Warrior that his commanding officer was indeed lost in thought, "Addergrad to Charlamagne," his voice holding more than a little concern.

Charlamagne blinks three times before speaking, "What was that Nash?"

"An old Terran saying, a penny for your thoughts," he replies, "I am not entirely sure what it means, but I think it may be something along the lines that you will be richer if you share your problems with another."

"Mmmm, that makes some sense," says the Clan claimant to the Lyran Throne, "though what does a Clan Warrior need of riches. I was more that content to remain as I was."

"Aye, of that I have no doubt, but you are the one who often espouses the dictates of Fate and how one cannot escape them," his smile reassuring to the troubled Warrior, "guess it is easier when the path they lay out is one you can understand, quiaff."

Moderately surprised at the insight expressed by his companion, for never before has he revealed any awareness, let alone interest, in Fate and Fortune, "Aff, that it most assuredly is. When did you become so insightful?"

"I do not know, perhaps I have always been so, just never had the need or inclination to mention it out loud," Nash says, "but you looked as if you were about to take on a Dire Wolf alone, with naught but your own two hands and I could not let you do that. I felt you needed to know that you are not alone, and I shall remain at your side as long as I am useful."

After a momentary pause, "And so long as you do not embarrass the Clan," he adds with a mirthful smirk, "I am used to your eccentric ways, but some of the others," he emphasizes with a motion of his head to the side, indicating the gathered Fleet that will escort him to Arluna and beyond, serving him in his attempt at integrating the Adder Commonwealth, as it has become popularly known, into the ways of Clan Star Adder.

None believe it will be easy, nor will it be quick, even after years of being Clan rule, there are many in all current Clan controlled territory that have not accepted reality. The three things they all do believe though is their Clan, their Khan and the young man who has brought over thirty systems under the influence of Clan Star Adder. An act that did not waste a single Adder Warrior, an act that preserved thousands of lives, an act that surpasses everything accomplished during Operation: Revival, and in the minds of many that are now waiting for the fleet to initiate its first jump, only the Founder ranks higher.

"So," Nash asks, "what will you say to the UIW? What will you say to the people of your Adder Commonwealth," Charlamagne winces at the mention of the name he came up with at the last moment.

Minutes pass, Charlamagne silent, giving his answer just as the jump warning tone reverberates through the Ships, "I do not know....," the rest, if there was any, is lost as reality is shredded and torn by the massive energies released by the engines of the JumpShip...

The quest of Charlamagne is finally underway, and may the Fates smile kindly and favorably upon him, for he will need all the favors he can for his mission.........

Kolovraty
Clan Star Adder Mobile Field Command

The double pair of Clan Elemental Guards raised the arms on which was mounted the ever popular .50 caliber machine guns, their commander on the integral radio informing the Star Colonel that a pair of Warriors wearing Lyran uniforms were approaching, neither was armed, though one was holding a stick, upon which was tied the stereotypical 'white flag'.

By the time the Lyran had reached the guards, and stopped but a few meters distant, close enough that none could miss with their weapons should the two make any sudden moves, the tall, thin Star Colonel was already waiting, having gotten a ride in an old three-wheeled ICE ground car.

She stood in the middle of the four, with the fifth Elemental standing directly behind her, she quickly assesses the two Spheroids as a non-threat before speaking, "I am Star Colonel Isis Hobbes, and you are who? I have been under the impression that all Lyran Warriors had left Kolovraty shortly after Clan Star Adder had defeated their meager defenses."

The younger of the two salutes before she responds, "Ma'am, I am, or was, Hauptmann Francine Mellini of the 23rd Arcturan Guard Regimental Combat Team, or what's left of 'em after you all tore us a new one. My units were on the southern pole conducting military exercises and under a communications blackout due to the storms and heavy magnetic interference that is common there at the time of your Trial."

"Once we moved north, we had a few surprises waiting for us," she says, "The most surprising of which was the fragmentation of the Lyran Commonwealth, followed shortly after by a speech by another Adder named Charlamagne Steiner. We laid low for awhile trying to get more information, Ma'am. We weren't real sure as to what kind of reception we'd get if we just stepped out of nowhere."

"Wasn't long before we got the gist of what has been happening over the last three months while we been down under, and frankly Ma'am, based upon how the last Archon, Estates General, and the rest have treated us. And how your people have been more helpful than they over the last year or more, I polled my people and we done decided to back your man Charlie. Only one problem, our ride skipped the area, so we could really use a lift to where he is, or will be."

"You think he could use an experienced and reliable combat unit, even one that is badly mauled and was formerly set against him and his Clan?"

Isis too had heard of Charlamagne's call to the Lyran people, even a few rumors had trickled back to this world, most of them she discounted as being to far fetched. However, here before her was a representative of a Lyran RCT, asking her if she thought they'd be welcomed, she was at a loss for words, "I do not know. I believe there is still a WarShip in orbit. The only way to find out would be to ask," she says, "You," pointing to Francine, "come with me. Your companion will be escorted to our Mess and be given food while we try to get some answers."

(ooc: the 23rd Arcturan Guards Regimental Combat Team (of which at best Im thinking 1 FP total survives); comprised of a BattleMech, an AeroSpace, an Armor and an Infantry Brigade (or what's left of them, if anything), will require a lift to Charlamagne Steiner's "Adder Commonwealth" (no, I still haven't come up with a better name, though I am open to suggestions), I figure since he will be passing through, he can make a short detour on his way to his first stop before reaching it.)

Charlamagne sat slumped forward in his chair aboard the DropShip, attached to the JumpShip which was carrying him to those worlds which had declared to follow him. They had chosen to follow him because the Khan of his Clan, Stanislav N'Buta of the Star Adders, had asked him to present himself to the people of the Lyran Commonwealth as an alternate to the Steiner-Davion, Kelswa-Steiner, and who knows who else, to the position of Archon. They had chosen him more because of the name he bears, this he knows, his name and the hope that he represented something better.

Of course it could just be that he, Charlamagne Steiner was part of something stronger, more secure, more stable than the Lyran Commonwealth had become. And people would do things that most would view as outrageous and previously unthinkable in order to retain security and stability. Whatever their reason, billions, if not trillions, of people had chosen him as their Leader. In him they have placed their trust, hopes and dreams, and he would do his best to prove himself worthy of their decision. Now he knows, Charlamagne Steiner knows how the Khan must feel everyday, to have the fate of so many resting on his every choice, and dreading those moments should his decisions turn out to be the wrong ones.

At the time the Lyran Nation was still whole, Peter Steiner-Davion was alive and serving in that capacity, so the likelihood of many actually shifting their allegiance was very low, at best the Khan and Charlamagne believed no more than a dozen would do so. There was even the thought of challenging Peter Steiner-Davion personally for the position, however both knew that acceptance by the Archon of that was beyond the realm of possibility.

All that was before someone, or more realistically, a group of someones, detonated a nuclear device, maybe more, but that was unknown as the Clan, and the "Adder Commonwealth", have been Interdicted by ComStar, nearly preventing the people from learning anything since their declaration. The resulting explosion has also inflicted massive suffering and further death from fallout and all the ills and evils associated with nuclear detonation.

Charlamagne has much on his mind, as his posture attests, his head cradled on his hands as he releases a deep sigh. The first order of business would be to at least get communications in his realm functional. Bit by bit, pieces of information about the worlds have trickled in, from Clans Jade Falcon and Ice Hellion had come word that not so insignificant forces once of the Lyran Commonwealth have arrived in their territories, pledging fealty to a Star Adder.

From the Union of Independent Worlds, details about each world, their names and what they are bringing to his Adder sub-Nation, have been relayed, along with further LCAF Units that have somehow managed to get word out of their intent. How they managed it considering ComStar's monoploy is unknown, but does go to prove the old addage "where there's a will, there's a way", and billions have found their Will and their Way. Both of which were embodied by Charlamagne Steiner of Clan Star Adder.

Back to the matter of the status of his realm, once it has been reintegrated with those Powers that were willing to ignore ComStar, it would be necessary to build up defenses. Charlamagne can not ignore the fact that there is a War going on, and in order to protect his people, which in his mind also makes them citizens of Clan Star Adder, which is another subject to be addressed, though that can wait for a short time, in order to protect the choice and lives of his people, he would have to build up and expand those Units that are already on their way to the "Adder Commonwealth".

Khan N'Buta had included some ideas of his own, ideas that were originally intended for the Clan, but have been given to Charlamagne. The time was still not right to attempt implementing them within the Clan yet, however a new realm presented so many possibilities, in a sense Charlamagne and the "Adder Commonwealth" could be used as a testing grounds for many of the Khan's ideas.

Granted Charlamagne was not thrilled with the concept of being used as a guinea pig, but he was still an Adder Warrior and Officer, still followed the will of the Khan. Fortunately Khan N'buta has given him extremely liberal leeway in what he was allowed to do, for as he said shortly before Charlamagne boarded the DropShip in which he now resides, "It would not be wise to be seen as a mere extension of Clan Star Adder. To so alter the lives and routines of the people which have seen the fall of the Lyran Commonwealth would only give them reason to resent you. They will not be able to admit that the choice they made was in error, and thus would place the blame solely on you Charlamagne. Patience at a time such as this will be your greatest asset," Khan Stanislav N'Buta had said.

"Begin with the basics, Communications and Security, satisfy those and they will be more inclined to go along with your next project or change. As a whole, people dislike and distrust change, unless given a good reason for it, and even then they will be reluctant. Initially focus on what you know and are familiar with, find trustworthy people, a major undertaking all its own, to administer other aspects. Above all, never lie to them. Tell them your concerns, empathize with them, and in return they will likely express the same in return."

"Most importantly, never forget that your power comes from them, a fact that many do or just outright ignore, much to their chagrin, when they are ousted from power. For much like the Clans, should they perceive you as weak, inattentive or uncaring, you will be but the most recent leader to fall. The Clans have successfully devised a means by which to remove an ineffectual leaders with usually minimal impact on the rest of society, and as we have seen, the Inner Sphere, for the most part, is quite content to initiate a Civil War in order to enact change in a government. Though the Clans are not immune to doing the same as you are well aware, for us it is the exception, not the general rule."

"In the end, they will enable you to do much so long as what you do proves beneficial and you succeed more often than you fail, in that there is no difference between the Clans and the Inner Sphere. I learned this early, it was something that Tabitha never acknowledged. Cassius learned it, though it was years after he lost the Khanship before he did. Use all the Clans as examples as to what will work and what will not. Do what Clan Star Adder has always done best, learn from others through observation and study. Then act as you see best for your people, that is what it truly means to be Khan, or Archon, First Prince, Coordinator. That is what being a leader is ultimately about, not what is best for you, but what is best for those that follow you."

The Khan of Clan Star Adder has a tendency to use words as precisely as he uses a laser, to ramble even at times, but he has shown over and over again that his observations have been accurate. Clan Star Adder has grown, expanded its influence, even in the midst of a War. It has made inroads with other Nations, giving itself influence in Realms far removed from the current conflict.

The Star of the Clan climbs ever higher, its radiance shining over ever more worlds, while the fortunes and fates of so many others diminishes and fades as they are pressed upon by dissent and discontent, from within as well as without.

The Star Colonel, and Archon-Designate, was brought out of his musings by the tone of an imminent Jump, so moving to his bunk he secured himself, and closed his eyes. Trying to relax just a bit before the JumpShip shredded the laws of nature then rewove them as it emerged at its next destination. Charlamgne though about what he would say to the people once communications were restored, what he would say to the Committee of the UIW, for he would be traveling through their Territory before he reach his own, and he, the Clan, owed them something for all they have suffered and endured.

Charlamagne's thoughts were splintered when the Ship finally Jumped, and upon arrival at the next recharge point, he was called to the Bridge, forcing him to put off piecing back together what he was contemplating until much later....

Adder Commonwealth

The Lyran Commonwealth is at best dying, though most believe that it is dead, a corpse which spans hundreds of light years. However, whatever the condition of the body the cells that formed it, represented by worlds, star systems and billions upon billions of people, still live.

They breathe, they go about their lives as best they can, uncertain of what will become of them, unsure if the replacement they have chosen to represent their vision of the future will survive to next sunrise.

While the major names differ: Adder Commonwealth, Arc-Royal Lyran Commonwealth, Lyran Commonwealth of Skyes, Rim Worlds Republic, they all have one thing in common. Each seeks to provide that intangible element that will give the people a reason to hope for the future.

The worlds that make up the first of those, the Adder Commonwealth, aren't stupid. They know that they chose to follow a Warrior from one of the forces, the Clans of Kerensky, specifically Clan Star Adder. They are fully aware that most of the others will see them as traitors, but then the same would be even more true for the Rim Worlds Republic, for it was Daphne Rowe and her first public attempt at resurrecting that specter that poisoned the body of the Lyran Commonwealth, and the mind of one Adam Steiner, that has led to this.....

In all, the Adder Commonwealth, the people decided to follow a Steiner, sure he is a Clansman, but throughout everything that has happened...the Plagues, the WMDs, the conflicts and whatnot, Clan Star Adder has done what it could for the people of the Lyran Commonwealth while asking for nothing in return. In a sense, these people felt as if a debt was owed, a debt of honor, a concept well known by everyone that the Clans adnered to, even if each held a slightly different view of it.

Shortly after the invasion of the then world Somerset, renamed in mid-battle, someone blew up one of the ShipYards far above the surface of the planet. The Khan could've had every survivor from that invasion killed, as such has happened before in Successor State history, but he didn't, he sent them all home. Even went so far to enlist the assistance from another Clan, Hell's Horses and the Periphery Nation of the Magistracy of Canopus, in order to get all the Lyrans off the world of Addergrad.

The loss of so many put a sense of resentment and a desire for revenge against the Clan, but then other events sidetracked the people. Then came Tharkad, a nuclear device, rumors have even suggested up to half a dozen, exploded, killing the Archon, Peter Steiner-Davion and the Estates General. That event was the last in a long line of sicknesses that had weakened the immune system of what was once a strong, vibrant and healthy body.

Not long after, Adam Steiner revealed himself. Under the name of Leonidas, though that piece of subterfuge didn't last long, as still alive after being thought long dead. Believed to have died fighting alongside the men and women that followed him to Addergrad, he placed himself alongside histories most infamous traitors and betrayers. Why he should still have a life when so many lost theirs in pursuit of his desires turned many away from him....and to an extent the Steiner Bloodlines in the Inner Sphere.

Had he stayed dead, one fourth of the dessicated Lyran Nation would likely have not chosen to follow a Clanner who's only claim to "validity" is his name amongst the people who once proud Lyrans. Had he remained a ghost, and possible martyr, Arc-Royal or Robert Kelswa-Steiner could have used him as a rallying point for trillions. Had he stayed buried, the RWR would be considerably weaker while they would be all the stronger.

The Adder Commonwealth more than likely owes its existence to Adam's continued existence, the irony of which is not lost on more than a few. If one of their own, well one whom they thought their own, would be capable of betraying those who trusted him, then perhaps the Steiners who chose to follow General Kerensky had the right idea all along. Perhaps the Clans are right and the Successor Houses should bear the blame for the Wars that followed in the wake of the fall of the First Star League. Perhaps the House Lords are the reason the League fell to begin with, for had they not been so intent upon their own selfish ambitions, one Stephan Amaris would not have been able to seize power, plunging humanity into a spiral of decline that has persisted for over 300 years.

The people of the Adder Commonwealth have decided that enough is beyond enough, and have looked elsewhere, sought outside of what they know and have known all their lives, for a leader that will honestly take a point of view that focuses on internal matters over external wishes.

Proof of that dream is manifesting across scores of worlds and systems, former units that were once part of the LCAF are arriving, swearing allegiance, pledging fealty, promising service to the man who represents a new beginning, a new hope for a people that have long been treated poorly and ignored.

The worlds of Vermezzo and Virtue receive portions of the 26th Lyran Guard Regimental Combat Team, pieces of the Carlisle-Alarion Province Militia Regiment (ooc: that's the name listed) land on Amminadav and Nuneaton. Tangua receives the Dixie-Furillo Province Militia Regiment, or at least fragments of it, as the Loxley Home Guard Aero and Armour units protect their homeworld as it declares for Charlamagne Steiner.

Alarion and the inexperienced, yet devout, Alarion Naval Academy Training AeroSpace Brigade also elect to follow the Steiner Clansman, a huge coup for the unknown Adder Warrior. Wiltshire, Etiler, Tainjin, Sappir, being but just a few more worlds that have or play host for Charlamagne's newest acquisitions in terms of military forces.

Even with all the surprises and shocks over the comings and goings of once Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces units, what surprises the people of the "Adder Commonwealth" the most, as well as Charlamgne Steiner, Khan Stanislav N'Buta, Clan Star Adder and beyond is the emerging vessels over and under Alarion:

The Weiselflink, a Mjolnir-class WarShip; a Star, to use Clan military terminology, of Fox-class corvettes, the Angela Franks, Hermes Farnsworth, the Donegal, Skye and the Solaris. Several JumpShips are also part of the armada, the Monolith-class Stealth, and the ones making up the Naval Expeditionary Fleets from TF's Angela Franks and Katrina Steiner.

Whether or not Charlamagne Steiner, Star Colonel of Clan Star Adder and Archon-Designate for more than a score of worlds is accompanied by any Naval units from his Clan, he will soon find out that he has the beginnings of a respectable Naval force of his own.

It now remains to be seen if he is a more intelligent and possesses more wisdom than the last few Archons who led a unified Lyran Commonwealth, and proves to be more able than the others vying for the throne that was once on the now radiation blasted and hostile world of Tharkad.

The worlds of Vorzel and Eutin have never been anything special, other than being close to the former Lyran National Capital of Tharkad, now believed to be in ruins, though even that distinction was overshadowed by Donegal, Capital of the Isle of Skye, now a claimant for the Lyran Archonship in addition to Arc-Royal and Charlamagne Steiner of Clan Star Adder to whom those two worlds have decided to support.

Nope, Vorzel and Eutin aren't really players on the interstellar stage, at least they weren't in the past....today however, that changes. They are about to be the recipients of some very unexpected guests, whose point of origin is even more unexpected.....

"Vorzel/Eutin Orbital Command," each planet addressed separately, though the message is overall the same, "We hear you too have decided to pledge to follow Star Colonel Charlamagne Steiner of Clan Star Adder. With your permission, we will provide your world with its defense."

"Of the claimants to the throne of Archon, he has been the only one that asked for the support of the people, which makes him a better choice by far than the others. Late of Donegal, the BattleMech, AeroSpace and Auxillary Brigades of the 1st Donegal Jaegers Regiment is placing itself under the Command of Vorzel.

"While the BattleMech, AeroSpace and Armor Brigades of the 2nd Donegal Regimental Combat Team will defend Eutin as best they can. In the Name of Charlamagne Steiner, these forces and these worlds for the People."

Still in shock, the Militia Commanders of both worlds can't say much, and don't say a thing when dozens of DropShips detach and begin their descent. The speed of their approach less than the usual 1G, a sign that they pose no threat, their courses steady and their destination clear, the primary Space Ports will soon enough have more to do than they've had in weeks.

Upon landing, the symbol emblazoned on each and every DropShip is plainly visible, the old Lyran Fist remains, but is has been altered. Half its former size, it now rests at the lowest point of, and is pierced by, a stylized Cameron Star, while coiled about and within the Fist is a representation of a Star Adder, the totem animal of Clan Star Adder, its head held aloft by a portion of its body, forming the letter C with its body as the head and its eyes are directed toward the viewer, above the Fist.

The JumpShips vanish, presumed to return to Donegal, since that was from whence the Jaegers and RCT originated....

Clan Star Adder OZ
Adder Commonwealth
Coventry
Planetary Capital Building

"....an' dat's duh sit'ation Sirs and Ma'ams," Hauptman Clampett says, "I cans poss'bly win a Trial, buts I gots lil chance 'ginst the Snakes or Worms. I knows y'all gave me speshul 'thority 'gardin' dem jawbreakers, an's I 'preciates dat. Dey's a'ready been shipped from dah warehouse tah a'sorted candy shops."

"Now I jus' needs tah know from y'all if'n y'all wants me an' the boyos to 'cept dah Adm'rals Trial, an' pos'ble Heegrah if'n we lose. I thinks dat dah Adm'ral has gots 'nough fireworks tah keep dah Worms and Snakes on a short leash if'n dey gets all uppity an' tries anyting funny."

The looks on the assembled men and women, who serve as the legal civilian representatives, and thus the Governing Body for the people of Coventry. All were elected to their positions, and each one knows that he or she may be replaced by Clan Star Adder should they not be productive. Something that they've all been trying really hard to accomplish lately.

The Planetary Parliament as its called is filled by popular vote, the last taking place just a year before the collapse of the Lyran National Government. Needless to say the last few weeks were harrowing, at first the Parliament was considering joining the Arc-Royal contingent. Then the recorded message from a Clan Warrior reached the Governor, who then shared it with the rest. Weeks of debate followed, all agreeing that only a unanimous Parliament decision should be valid, opponents and proponents argued their points, all were passionate and eloquent in their speeches, opinions changed and changed again.

In the end, the Governor and Council agreed, unanimously, to let the people decide, and no effort nor expense was spared to ensure that as many people as possible were reached and informed. Six times a day Charlamagne Steiner's message was replayed for the world over the course of a ten days, and that was just from the Government sponsored broadcasts. None kept track of independent and word of mouth.

Then, last month, a referendum was called. The public would have the final say in the course of action taken. The people would quite literally determine which Archon claimant the world would support. Three days of voting, the turnout surpassing all projections by thirty seven percent, the final estimated turnout being at nearly ninety two percent of the planet's voting population. However a significant number likely coming from the age bracket of thirteen to seventeen year olds, the special circumstances behind the situation prompting a one time reduction in the legal voting age.

When the votes were counted, a requirement of two-thirds having been predetermined for the vote to be followed and enforced, the results were shocking, not only did the populace choose one that few in Parliament expected, they did so in overwhelming numbers. Seventy Eight percent chose Star Colonel Charlamagne Steiner of Clan Star Adder, while Arc-Royal, Skye, the RWR and actual independence received eleven, nine, zero and two percent respectively.

The people had spoken, Coventry would now be a holding of Clan Star Adder.

Lori Chaks, current PR Rep for Coventry Metal Works spoke, and while she's not part of the Council, the importance of the Factory allowed her considerable leeway and acceptance. The fact that CMW employed most of the populace, and supported a rather large portion of the economy, gave the corporation a great deal of influence on all planetary matters, "Hauptman Clampett," she began by addressing the old soldier, "I understand you to say that even with the backing of CMW you would be unable to hold out against the predators now orbiting Coventry?"

Leroy looks to the woman, "Aye, Ma'am," he replies, " 'ginst one o' dem, I prob'ly could do what dah Titans did 'ginst the Pidjins. Mehbe even two. All three tho' Ma'am, well, a honey cover'd fat man would has a bettuh odds at outrunnin' a rabid and stahvin' bear."

"I be dah firs' tah admit I knows lil on dese Clan Trials, best I figger is it be a selec' group 'ginst 'nother selec' group, us'ally of smallah size an' lessah skill'd. Still boggles me mind as tah how dem Clanners gets anywheh doin' tings dat ways, but I cans see dah appeal."

Hauptman Leroy Clampett continues, "Now sincet we's was challeng'd, I be guessin' dat I be dah one tah pick where, and I definit'ly know dis rock bettah than dem Leaguers. I knows places dat 'Mechs woulds be slow'd an' confin'd, makin' Armor yous best bet."

"Howevah, I don't trust none dat put dere faith in Adam. Not after what he done to all dem good ol' boys and' gurls dat follow'd him tah Som.., er, Addergr'd. No Sir, no Ma'am. I first go tah join dah Cappies or Dracs afore I goes anywhehs nea' dah Worms. Hells, even dah Falcons would be my chos'n ovuh dah likes of Witch Rowe and her bum-boy Adam, an' dats knowin' hows populah dah Falcons are heres on Cov'ntry."

"Me and me boyos wills do as you asks," the flection in his voice indicating that he's near the end of his speaking, much to the relief of the gathered dignitaries, "thoughs I sure not be likin' tah waste dah lives o' any. Dey's all good boys and gurls, an' deserves a chance tah lives and learn. Me though, I be old, plum near wore out. So ev'n if dey leaves. I be stayin' to make sure I follow me orduhs, by deprivin' dah enemies of Coventry access an' posseshun o' dah Fact'ries."

"I be awaitin' ou'side dem doors for y'all decision," and at that, Hauptman Leroy Jethro Clampett salutes, does a crisp adn precise about face, and walks out the door.

The closing of which signals the debates and arguments as to how Coventry will proceed, there not being time to poll the populace on this matter. The final choice will be their, and theirs alone. More than a few are scared to death, with four fainting shortly after the Hauptman leaves.

Post dated to the end of cycle 40.....

Undisclosed location Western Deep Periphery
The voyage of Task Force 8 had so far proven to be as uneventful as most deep space voyages are.  The biggest threat was the sheer boredom of traveling long stretches through deep space.   It was still impossible, even in the middle of nowhere, to escape from the paperwork necessary to keep even a force as small as this one going.    As such, Star Commodore Jeffery was still awake, working away at his terminal in the early hours of the morning, when a most unexpected signal interrupted the normal routine.

"Star Commodore, AsTech Bradley has just informed me of the receipt of a very unusual HPG signal.  It is not from an allied source, and after a quick glance I thought it best to immediately bring it to your attention."

"If you feel it is that important Star Captain, go ahead and start the playback."

As the message started playing, the initial cheer at an excuse to take a break from the task force's paper work promptly changed to a different emotion, outrage.  Not only had the insane Daphne Rowe escaped and seemed to consolidate her power, but the cowardly Adam Steiner was her husband and leader of their armed forces.  More shocking and also explaining what they had received the signal in the first place, was the fact that TF 8 was smack dab in the center of a unknown portion of their realm.   All the news was not bad though as it appeared that the main reason the RWR had come out into the open was the shattering of the Lyran realm.  Apparently even a portion of the Lyrans had the foresight to declare for one of CSA's young ristars.  Despite the fact that scuttlebutt had probably already informed all ships in the flotilla, Star Commodore Jeffery opened up the fleet wide channel.

"My fellow Adders, it appears that the remnants of the Rim World Republic have emerged from the holes they have cowering in.  We find ourselves amidst a portion of their realm and as such our former orders are now void.  A good third of the shattered Lyran realm has declared for one of our own.  It is our duty to oppose the evil Amaris spawn of the Rim Worlds Republic while doing what we can to aid our new Lyran civllians and citizen's.  New orders will be cut immediately that shall soon have the Rimmers hiding once more under the rocks from whence they came."

Clan Star Adder Demenses
Adder Commonwealth
Alarion
Slip & Slide Gentlemen's Club

The dancer's "work" name is Hannah, Hannah Job, though out in the real world she is known as Ahlissa Almor. A 1.3 meter tall, 49 kilo, blonde haired, green eyed beauty. A beauty who is not as bright as she seems, and that's not referring to her intellect, she is actually quite smart, genius level smart, possessing a half dozen doctorates. No, this radiant young woman has a twisted dark side, for she is also Alarion's most wanted assassin, saboteur, and extortionist. These endeavors has earned her yet a third name, The She-Wolf.

While some would look down on her for being part of this particular form of employment, it does provide her with nearly unrestricted access to the worlds movers and shakers. Whether they be political, military, corporate, and even religious, she has discovered that few men, and a fair number of women, can resist her innocent appearance, overt sexuality, forward nature and flirtatious advances. No, regardless of what people claim, this job gives her more power than they can, or want to, imagine. Being an erotic dancer/performer quite literally the most influential job a woman can have, and is a damn good form of exercise.

This evening, an evening she usually has off from work, came suddenly. A message in one of her many dead drops gave her the name and itinerary of her target, and a few drops of a special concoction of her own creation in the drink of the girl that was scheduled to perform got her a call to fill in.

Not long into her second routine of the night, she caught her target entering the Club as he payed the cover fee. A few minutes later he was seated near the back wall, a waitress taking his drink order, which was delivered soon thereafter. Once she concluded her dance, she returned to the back and redressed and moved out onto the main floor, interacting with the customers.

Occasionally she would catch his attention, smile innocently, and quickly turn away, for from past experience she had learned that such a display resulted in more private dances and larger tips. It also got her alone with the majority of her targets, and if all went well, it would do the same tonight.

Fifteen minutes pass before she is notified by house security that she has been requested for a private dance in one of the VIP suites.....

VIP Suite 4

A man, mid forties, slight middle age spread about his middle, neatly combed hair, manicured nails, stylish suit complete with silk tie, has just ordered his third beverage of the night. Initially he had no intention of getting a suite, but there was that one girl that has mesmerized him. She was exquisite on the stage, such grace and flexibility, her knee length hair flowing and swirling around her nude body. The control she exhibited was something out of a holo-drama, the way she manipulated her golden locks allowed her an impressive degree of covering for her charms, teasing the crowd with furtive glances and peeks. That girl is indeed something special, and he felt it would be worth the exuberant extra cost in order to see her dance in a more intimate setting, hence his current location within the Club.

The anticipation building, reaching near unbearable levels before she finally entered the Suite, and what an entrance she made. Even though she was virtually silent, the man only sensing that he was no longer alone, her perfume announcing her arrival before his eyes were captured by her image. And such an image she represented, her costume was loose and flowing. A pearlescent, barely translucent wisp of cloth, looking as if spun or woven of cloud-stuff was belted at waist and neck by silver chains; while on wrists, ankles and throat were fine rings and bands of silver filigree.

Her hair was loose, the personalized climate control system stirring the air current just enough to cause the ends and stray stands to perform their own dance, almost as if they had a life of their own. Like an angelic descendant of Medusa, this girl seduced him with her hair, petrified him with her eyes, though in a manner that he found most pleasing as it made him feel more alive than he has ever felt.

He attempted to speak, but before the words could be released, she had glided over to him, her dress and hair barely moving, and placed a finger upon his lips. At such close range he saw the lines, swirls and shapes of along her finger, and as his vision moved along the arm, he saw more designs. With a flash he realized what they were, henna tattoos, essentially temporary tattoos that were drawn on using henna based inks. Such artwork was normally black or a dark brown, being the cheapest colors, however these were drawn in gold, even possessing a metallic tone. The dim and strobing light sparking off the metal, intriguing him through the material with shadowed revelations of her curves and form.

The girl raises her arms, and music begins paying, slow and even tempoed, to it she begins slow and sensuous undualtions, turning her body this way and that, bending one way then the other. In patient progression the music increased in speed, and as it did, so did she, throughout it his vision, his attention never wavered. It was at this time that Hannah/Ahlissa/The She-Wolf knew she had him. The combination of the lights, her perfume and the chemicals contained with the gold henna ink combined with the adrenaline and endorphins in his system to effectively paralyze him. The effect was temporary, and he would emerge from the topor with a mild hangover, but otherwise unharmed....except for being unable to recall what she looked and sounded like.

The music continues, but she stops, steps over to the divan upon which he is seated, and sits upon is lap, straddling his thighs, her arms draped over his shoulders. She leans close to his ear and whispers, "You made this to easy Mr. Johnson, lucky for you someone just wanted me to deliver a message, thus you will live. Word has reached the ears of  people of your support of Charlamagne Steiner and the Clan backed Adder Commonwealth that has emerged at his behest."

"These people have some concerns over the sudden expansion of influence that Clan Adder now has, but are willing to wait and watch, for now at least. In the meantime they have something that may be of interest to this Clan Warrior-Archon, or at a minimum the Watch of Clan Star Adder. No I don't know what the item is, not would I tell if even if I did, suffice to say that I was paid to find you, get you alone and deliver the message."

"If you wish to learn more, then be on this DropShip," she purrs as she places a small datachip into the inner pocket of his jacket, "in fifteen minutes the chemicals will wear off, and you will remember little of me, but you will recall what was said clearly. So sad I cannot allow you to retain memories of me, but for the next ten minutes I will give you that dance you paid for, one that will haunt the aethereal of your consciousness and dreams. You may not remember me precisely, but you will remember my essence, and like most men, will long and pine for what you will never have."

She stands, then leans forward at the waist, "For that I do apologize," are the last words she says, as her hands bring his hands up along her thighs, over her firm round buttocks, around and over her taunt abdomen, and finally to her breasts. She mashes her chest into his slack and open hands and places a deep, hard, passionate kiss on his lips, her tongue lightly brushing against his for a few, precious seconds before she pulls away, resuming her dance.

The next ten minutes are the most ecstatic and frustrating minutes of his life, he watches her dance, eyes pleading for release form the paralyzation. She smiles when tears start dripping form their corners, her dress floating up and off her gyrating torso as the first tear trickles down his left cheek. When she has finished, she leaves the dress behind, walking through the Club fully nude, uncaring about the stares and glances she garners from employees and patrons alike.

In the Suite, Mr. Johnson can simply stare intently at the dress, a heap on the floor and next to it a small, silver figurine of a Wolf...

The gentleman known as Lendore Johnson emerges from the Suite, the dress clasped in one had, the figurine in the other, his mind fuzzed and throbbing. Straightening up, he strides towards the exit, trying to appear confident, as if nothing had happened. He had asked to see the dancer he had hired for a dance, but none could tell him her name, or wouldn't. No one would provide a description either, he presumes that she either paid them, or dosed them as she did him.

He decides not to press his luck, one in his position rarely did so if he desired to stay in his position. The reputation of The She-Wolf is well known amongst his circle of associates, so he definitely did not push to hard after he recovered mobility. Instead he decided to learn from this experience and intended to shift his routine, making as few scheduled appointments as possible, doing what he could to randomize his life.

Once outside, he signals for his car from the valet, and soon he is cruising along a highway, going to no place in particular, just driving, and listening. That datachip contained both a text and audio file, and the message was definitely intersting:

QuoteEsteemed Mister Lendore Johnson,

My organization would like to make you aware of an auction that may be of interest to you. A package of considerable value has come into my organization's possession, and we lack the means to use it ourselves. Consequently, we intend to offer it for sale to the highest bidder. Bidding will start at 2 billion C-Bills.

If this interests you, send a representative with cash or negotiables equal to at least twice the starting bid to the Carstairs star system, one jump from Yed Prior. A JumpShip will meet you there at the Nadir Jump Point and transfer you to the confidential location of the auction.

With sincere wishes of continued good health and fortune,
The Vicar

Charlamagne Steiner crossed over the border into the 'Adder Commonwealth' a few days ago, entering the Tangua system at the planet's Nadir point, and upon arrival his small Fleet began receiving transmissions about the status of the planet, with some details, mostly rumors, about other nearby systems.

The Adder Warrior, now Archon-Designate in the minds of billions, is still overwhelmed with it all, talked with a number of people, getting a better picture of what would need to be done in order to stabilize the situation. Already, three DropShips were making their way to the planet's surface, each containing CommTechs, MedTech, Engineers, and other personnel whose expertise was needed for an assortment of reasons.

There wasn't enough people accompanying the Star Colonel to remedy everything that needed to be addressed, though by careful delegation of what he does have, he should be able to at least assign a score, maybe a bit more, to each system he travels through to deal with immediate concerns.

Once the communication's network has been reestablished, then he should be able to get a better idea as to what was happening across his Clan's newest territories. Some of the news he's received, whether true or not, greatly weighs on his conscience, for already he has enemy units on several of his worlds...Free World, Rim World, Combine, Dark, Taurian, Suns...more than a dozen being threatened

Hard to believe that not so long ago he was on Arluna, doing what he could to alleviate the fears and concerns of the Congress of the Union of Independent Worlds, he's not sure he succeeded. The best he could say was that Clan Star Adder had no immediate desire or designs upon their Nation, unfortunately though he could offer nothing regarding other Clans.

For all Charlamagne knew he did more harm than good, why that bothered him was a puzzle, sure he admired, even respected the people that make up the population, they have overcome significant obstacles to get where they are, and will face many more. This feeling of sympathy however was nearly unfamiliar, especially for a group that a few years ago was a steadfast enemy of his Clan.

Is this what the Khan meant when he said A good leader worries about his people, a great leader worries about all people, the Cards revealed nothing on that subject, instead they hinted at something darker, but offered no details, being more vague than usual. Even his dreams, his subconscious, often assembling a clearer picture of what he read, has been unable to illuminate the shadows that shrouded the meaning of that reading...the last reading he has done since leaving UIW space.

Apparently the Cards have told him of something, but what were they trying to tell him? Whatever it is, it must be of great importance, for he has felt little desire or urge for another reading, and he suspects that until he has an epiphany, the Cards would tell him nothing on any topic. Instead they would just say the same in a different manner....no, until whatever was foretold came to pass, Star Colonel Charlamagne Steiner would have to rely upon himself and deal with situations as they arise on his own.....and that frightened him.

Leroy Jethro Clampett was now committed, almost a third of his troops would be facing a larger force of Leechers, not that it surprised him all that much. From past experiences he knew they would've done pretty much the same thing, even if he was still part of the LCAF, at least by using Clan Trial standards he's able to limit the damage and casualties. Still, it nagged at him that he had to order anyone out to their deaths, but that was the lot of a Soldier and the Commanding Officer.

In the mean time, he had other orders to give, "Calls up Sahjunt Way, tells 'im tah dat dah jahbrakuhs is a comin' wit us, bes' naht ta tempt dem Leechers, Worms an' Dracs wit dem. Duhnt wan' dem gettin' anuh cavahtuhs or nuhtin, lawd knows dey culd'n' resust usin' dem all if'n dey gots dah chance."

"Uh knows me boyos wills puts up hells own figh', bu' evuhn Uh knows dere odds be's mughtuh lows. Bestah be readuh fo' dah worsen, an's hopes fo' dah bes'."

[ooc: posted with Graegor's blessing...]

Boojum...

"...Mister Frehley, your paperwork is pretty much complete, You have met the children then?"  Judge Sandra Diaz asked.  The process had been gruelling-the legal forms alone tested the Adder Consul's patience many, many times.

"I have." he said.

"Well...I do not see any reason to delay this proceeding further-advocate for Children's services?"  Diaz asked.

Corpsman Bianh Dinh Lao stood up,  "Child Protective Services finds no significant issues with Fosterage, provided the children receive adequate educational support and are not required to renounce their citizenship, Your Honour."

Diaz nodded. "Very well.  Signatures?"  Documents, this time there was only a single signature required, were presented and signed.

"Mister Frehley, You are now the designated legal guardian in absentia to these children, their safety, health, and upbringing are your sole responsibility, until the age of their Majority, their behaviour is your responsibility, should either of them get into legal trouble while in your care, you, and you alone will be accountable to discipline them, and to pay back or absorb the actual criminal consequences.  Should they be abused in your care, you will be hunted down, the children taken from you, and you will face severe punishments regardless of other citizenship or position you may hold.  Do you understand, sir?" Diaz asked.

"I do."  The Adder Consul said.

"Then, It is so-ordered by this court, that Vincent Frehley is named Sole Legal Guardian to Lan Vanh Nghien and Giao Kun Nghien, ages five and Two standard Years, for the period of twelve, and Sixteen years separately, that he and he alone is permitted to accept, extend, or apply the perogatives of their Parental figure until such time as each has reached the age of Eighteen Years, that He is personally accountable and responsible for their upbringing, education, and all sundry duties and privelages accorded to a parent for that time, and that he will be responsible for providing them each their starting 'stake' upon adulthood equivalent to what is necessary that they be productive and contributing members of society."

The gavel thumped, "So ordered. Congratulations sir, you are a father now."

You are a father now, those words rang in Vincent's mind over and over, You are a father now. While he has had several thoughts about staring a family, the Clan and its needs always seemed to push such plans and ruminations into the recesses of his mind. Now, here, he had gained two children, all on behalf of the Deputy Director of the Inter-Clan Watch.

Lan, the elder of the two, has been quiet, withdrawn ever since he first met the boy. The doctors and psychologists stating that he is suffering from shock and other trauma. They expressed hope that with is age he should emerge from it eventually, how long though, that they could not answer. They simply advised him to be patient.

Giao on the other hand was a bundle of energy and loaded with questions, most of them asking mumsie, dadsie back?, to which Vincent, and the therapists prior, would only reply with not yet or later. On the whole, she was more trying than Lan.

Vincent had decided to remain on Kowloon for a time, mainly to give the kids time to get used to his presence, to looka nd think of him as family before returning to Arluna...though the thought has, more than once, come up of relocating here in order to keep them close to any friends and other family members should they come forth. However, from what he has learned, Lan, the Deputy Director, is believed to be the last of their blood relations, with a slim chance that other may still live, but with all the turmoil and troubles that have been inflicted upon this sector of the former Lyran Commonwealth, there is little hope of any announcing their existence.

After the hearing, Vincent brought the two to this old style ice cream parlor, even the decor was ancient, or at least replica, even down to the music coming out of the juke box. Lan hadn't touched his sundae, and Giao was wearing more than she had actually eaten. Vincent could only smile, recalling the pictures that his mother had shown him when he was a teenager of what he looked like in similar circumstances.

The waitress has been very friendly, for even though he hadn't told anyone what his purpose was here, everyone seemed to know. He surmised that it was his status as a member of Clan Star Adder combined with the very unusual fact that he, a Clansman, went through the process to adopt two native children. Yeah, that would cause a bit of a stir, but such is what the Clan does for itself, what one member will do for another if asked.

Now while being the Clan Star Adder Merchant Consul to the Union of Independent Worlds wasn't exactly a prestigious assignment, not one filled with all day negotiations, that would likely change in the near future, and Vincent intended to provide for his new charges the best that he was able. He was going to need to hire a nanny or two, tutors, and other caretakers, on retainer until needed. The shattering of the Lyran Commonwealth has placed his Clan and the UIW into a somewhat unique positions, ones that would undoubtedly, by necessity, bring many mercantile, and military, dealings. Such would soon enough give him more to business to handle than he has had over the last year, reducing the amount of time he would have freely available to dedicate to the children, so he would have to be prepared ahead of time.

It just may best to remain on Kowloon he ponders once more, what he needs can be had here just as easily as Arluna, and more importantly, what the children need, stability, means that the fewer upheavals that he must impose upon them, the better. A final decision need not be made now, so Vincent can put where to live aside for the moment...he glances at Giao, first things first, a certain young lady needs to be cleaned up. He motions to the waitress, who comes over, and seeing the chocolate covered face and hands of the girl, simply smiles, nods and takes her hand, leading her to the restroom to clean her up a bit.

While they are gone, Vincent talks softly, nothing specific, just trivial things...things from his youth, bits of history from his Clan, the last book he read, and other matters, said to get Lan used to his voice, to recognize it as friendly and caring...a small hope that his rambling would bring Lan out of his near catatonic state.

Clan Star Adder Zone Of Influence
Adder Commonwealth
Nadir Jump Point
Storfors

Charlamagne was now half away across the newest territory claimed by Clan Star Adder, at Tangua his fleet was joined by a small number of Trackers sent by the Khan in order to ease the Communications Interdiction (ooc: stated in Clan Star Adder Orders as submitted by Dis) that currently restricts his learning more about about what he has and what he faces.

Charlamagne quickly reviewed Star Charts of the worlds that comprise the Adder Commonwealth, cutting orders as appropriate to ensure semi-stable communications to as many worlds as possible in the shortest amount of time. A pair he sent ahead so that he could get information regarding his destination, and already that was being funneled to him as the drives recharged.

Other details were also reaching him, Coventry had fallen to the Free Worlds League, not really surprising considering what was facing the defenders, a respectably sized force of Armor, and they had nearly won that. However if they had, they still would have had to deal with Combine AND Rim World units on the ground and in Space. No, he couldn't fault them for losing, or accepting heigra, though he would see that they were commended for what they had done...possibly even upgrading their lost machines with Clan replacements.

One unit had even attempted to take Halifax, while certainly inspired, Charlamagne was glad that they withdrew, for right now he needs to know what he has to work with, what, other than communications, needs to be built up, and what can temporarily be ignored.

Other news from Clans Jade Falcon and Ice Hellion had also revealed that large former Lyran Units had appeared in their respective territories, seeking asylum, transport and/or escort into the Adder Annex, the latest term coined to describe the new Clan Star Adder territory, one of them of impressive composition when compared to the others, possessed nine JumpShips and over a dozen DropShips of its own, with a score of ASF Squadrons making up its numbers.

A few units were in nothing but name only, effectively destroyed by conflicts with Clans other than Star Adder, one of those was actually decimated by his Clan, yet the survivors still chose to follow him. For those men and women he was working hard to determine an appropriate reward, all he knew at this moment was that they would form the core of a new unit. He would rebuild them, he has the technology...they will be better, stronger, faster than before. They would be the Alpha Unit of the new Commonwealth.

Another small detail, yet very significant, would be the returning of all unit colors to their respective, and now lost, homeworlds. They had served the former Lyran State faithfully and with honor, doing so even when they were no longer treated in kind. This was something that was suggested to him by the UIW Archduchess, and one that he decided to utilize himself after long consideration. How the leaders of those nations concerned him little, they didn't care those few months ago, and he cares even less now.

This would the Grand Experiment of not only himself, but of the Clan as well, all at the behest of the Khan, for the betterment of ALL of Clan Star Adder, regardless of whether its citizens were of the Homeworlds or of the Inner Sphere.

By the time Charlamagne arrived at Alarion, he had gained a better understanding and idea as to what was available to the Clan within the borders of its newest territories, and overall he was impressed. There were of course some things that brought out concerns, mainly the opportunistic timing of Clan Spirit Cat with its attacks upon the systems of Loxley, Ciampino, Triesting, Qarahta, and Storfors, they arriving at the latter not long after he had jumped further along the route to Alarion.

Their holdings being on the very edge of the Periphery Border, gained as part of Khan N'Buta's Lend-Lease Act, and they had apparently moved some distance into the Lyran Commonwealth proper without taking any worlds to expand what they possess, with none of the attacked systems bordering their Zone. If the Cats were so desperate for territorial gains, then they should have been doing so from the beginning. No, they wait until now, after the "Adder Commonwealth" had sided with Clan Star Adder, after Khan N'Buta had informed the Grand Council of what had occurred within and to the Lyran Commonwealth.

Clan Spirit Cat, in Charlamagne's mind, was up to something, and it was something that he felt was not in line with pursuing the War against the Not-Named and Terrans. When he has the time, he would ask the cards, and hopefully they would provide some insight and direction as to how to deal with the interlopers.

First though, he had other concerns to contemplate...Clans Jade Falcon and Ice Hellion were escorting forces, forces that have sworn their loyalty to him, Star Colonel Charlamagne Steiner of Clan Star Adder, into the "Adder Commonwealth", and in respect he should be there to receive those forces in person and offer his, and his Clan's, gratitude to the leaders of those Clan escorts.

While not pleased with the name, the Mjolnir Class WarShip Wieselflink, would serve as his transport, giving the crews of the Adder Ships a chance to rest after the journey from Addergrad to Alarion, for his meeting with the Falcons and Hellions. And with a small attending escort of his own, large enough show that even here Clan Star Adder is strong, but not large enough to disrespect the other Clans, together they will be able to accomplish the tasks that await and lie before them.

"Is this a wise decision Star Colonel?"

"Probably not," replies Charlamagne Steiner, "but I believe there are others out there," he gestures at the bilkhead, indicating the vastness of Interstellar Space, "that want to put their past behind them. Others that would like a chance to start again with few or no questions asked about their past."

"Of that I have no doubt Sir, though how could such as those be trusted?"

"The training will weed out the weak, cull them from the remainder, leaving the strong of heart, mind and body. The training will instill a sense of interdependency on others, and if they believe that any cannot be relied upon to hold their end, pull their own weight, then they will remove any of questionable loyalties."

"And where did you get such a notion as this?"

"From Ancient Terra, Nineteenth Century founding, European in origin. A feudal nation of that era founded a military organization that gave the disheartened, the lost, the desperate another chance at life. At gaining honor and serving a purpose. The physical requirements were amongst the most stringent and demanding of any, few managed to complete the course, but those that did were rightly respected and feared."

"In the Units long history of service, it suffered only a handful of defeats, often fighting to the last man. That is something that we need, something that can inspire the populace to believe that they can be strong again, that they can be part of a greater whole, and that they can make a difference not only in the lives of themselves, but in the lives of people they will likely never meet or know personally," he explains, as his thoughts say something else, I am beginning to sound more like the Khan everyday. I wonder if he feels as I do, wholly inadequate to the task at hand and totally over his head with all that surrounds him?

"I have not had any interest in ancient history, Terran or otherwise. What was this Military Force called?"

"Prior to the dissolution of the Sponsoring Nation, it was known as the French Foreign Legion, and we will draw upon its history much in the coming months. There are several former Lyran Units that were destroyed for all intents and purposes, the survivors will form the Officer Core along with Veteran Clan Warriors. Other influences will be drawn from the Spartan Greeks, the 800, and all eras inbetween and beyond."

"An amalgamation of those historical Units that stressed esprit de corps, above and beyond what Clan Star Adder, even Clan Blood Spirit currently practice will be instilled or the recruits will perish during training. Simply put, if they live, they graduate and will go on to serve the Clan as the Elite of the Elite."

"And this foreign legion of yours, how will it be called?"

"That I do not know," is all he says in answer.

"Stanislav, are you sure this was a good idea," asks Cassius Adderson to his Khan.

"Honestly," replies the young man, "I am not sure, but there is just to much going on in our Clan for me to keep up with anymore, even with the assistance of The Watch acting as a type of filter, the amount of material that comes across my desk is near to overwhelming."

"Rosaleen does an admirable job at further reducing the workload, though she too is feeling the strain, as are your people i am certain judging from your recent fondness for facial hair. Admittedly however, it works for you."

Cassius strokes his beard, then stops with some embarrassment, once his Khan points such out, as the two adjust their attention to the happenings as shown on their screens representing the Clan Council, and prepare to cast their votes when the time comes...

Various Locations Within Clan Star Adder Territory

The Clan Council of Clan Star Adder had been convened, including the adKhans and Paladins, to discuss a rather unusual matter brought to the fore by the assimilation of the former Lyran Worlds into the Adder Collective. Some were in attendance in person, most though through real time HPG links, with a few having to been represented through proxy due to assignments or situations that did not allow them to be part of this gathering.

"Bloodnamed, Paragons and Honored Civilians of Clan Star Adder," announced Loremaster Dagmar Addersyn, "Khan N'Buta has requested your opinions and input on the matter," all assembled had received the Khan's proposal weeks ago, giving them plenty of time to read and formulate thoughts, "it is now time to give voice and render a verdict."

"With the sudden expansion of Clan Star Adder Territories, it is been proposed that a division into septs. An adjutancy of sorts that would focus on leading, supplementing and complimenting our culture over a designated portion of our Territories, much as the Adjutant position directs portions of our society."

"Also, these septs are to be governed by a new, yet to be named Rank. It is hoped this would benefit the Clan as a whole. The role of Khan is not as easy one to assume, and by delegating authority, Khan N'Buta hopes to groom possible future Khans for Clan Star Adder by implementing said Rank."

"Finally, much in the manner akin to renaming of Ghost Bear Territory, by choosing a National Name, an Identity of Solidarity, one that pays respect to all the elements that comprise Clan Star Adder, it will ease and encourage all citizens to make an effort in setting aside differences and misconceptions as they attempt to reconcile and unite."

"The fragment of the Lyran Commonwealth has been called by several names: Adder Commonwealth, Charlamagne's Commonwealth, and more than a few derogatory ones as well. In the past, as well as the present, the collection of worlds under Clan Star Adder influence has been called the Star Adder Domains, Clan Star Adder OZ, the Collective of Clan Star Adder, and even more less flattering labels. We are here today to settle the matter, to lessen the confusion of our citizens, and to show our allies and enemies that we are a united Clan."

"The most popular choices are before you on all subjects, please charter the course our Clan will follow in the future."

[ooc: Im not sure on the exact number of Bloodnamed within Clan Star Adder, especially after the Cobra Absorption, so Im making the numbers up]
Quote
Motion One: Creation of septs within Clan Star Adder.
Ayes: 307
Nays: 103
Abstain: 22

Motion Passes

"With the passing of Motion One, Clan Star Adder is now comprised of three septs, dubbed Protectorates. The first, composed of all systems in the Kerensky Cluster, Tanite and Pentagon Worlds are the Truscott Protectorate, after our Founder and First Khan. Sheridan is its Capital"

"The second, representing our longest Inner Sphere holdings, will be the Star Protectorate, governed from Somerset."

"And the most recent, the former Lyran Commonwealth systems, that had chosen to be part of our Clan is the Steiner Protectorate, in honor of not only the Warrior who brought them to us, but also to their past. Charlamagne Steiner will be allowed to choose the Capital from where to shepherd this Protectorate. To educate and guide the people in the Way of the Clans."

Quote
Item Two: Creation of Rank within Clan Star Adder
Ayes: 220
Nays: 212
Abstain: 0

Motion Passes

"Motion Two also passes. A new Rank being added to Clan Star Adder and its Council. The persons will also be served by a Lorekeeper, a junior Loremaster in essence."

"This new Rank will be referred to as urKhan, and is placed between Loremaster and saKhan in our Heirarchy. While it will be open to non-Bloodnamed, any contenders for the Rank of urKhan must have no less than fifteen years of military service, thus requiring at least Warrior status."

QuoteMotion Three: Name for the collective of Clan Star Adder territories.
Ayes: 393
Nays: 39
Abstain: 0

"As you have chosen, so shall it be. All territories that encompasses Clan Star Adder will henceforth be designated as Clan Star Adder Commonwealth States, or alternately The Commonwealth States of Clan Star Adder. Again, the name to honor and offer respect to those who have willingly come to us in peace and hope, and to represent the Warrior's commitment to the Welfare of the Common Man, Woman and Child that are the larger part of Clan Star Adder."

"There will obviously be other variations, but for all official notices, treaties, business and dealings, only those two are acceptable. All Orders, Requisitions, Requests and the like will have one or the other on its header or be ignored and reported to The Watch. Messages of any kind, whether from ally or enemy, if not addressed to either is likewise to be ignored and reported to The Watch. If they cannot respect this step in our Evolution, then they deserve, and will get none, in return."

With the voting done, the Motions resolved, Khan Stanislav N'Buta presses a few keys so as to express his thoughts to his fellow Clansmen, his peers, "Fiends," he begins, "rivals and kin. This day is a historic one for Clan Star Adder, for today we have shown our determination and our focus for improving our Clan."

"Before we were Clan, we were Star League, and it is the ideals of that prestigious gathering that has been our drive since Absalom Truscott was granted the honor of forming one of Kerensky's Clans. Of all the first Khans, only he was given the ability to choose who would be part of Clan Star Adder."

"We have taken the next step in fulfilling the Dream of Kerensky, thirty plus Systems chose to become part of our Clan and we have embraced them, accepted them, and honor them. As they are now part of us, we are part of them, and none shall ever be abandoned again."

"We are now more than Clan, we are more than Inner Sphere, we are Clan Star Adder Commonwealth States!"

"I, however, will add a third acceptable label for all official documents and dealings, the Star Adder Commonwealth. It is a little easier on the tongue," the Khan says with a low laugh, bringing smirks and nods from most of the assembled, prominent members of the Clan Council, including the Loremaster, much to his chagrin when he realized that he had.

Cassius is furious, a few hours ago he received a preliminary message from the Watch HPG Operators of ilKhan Pryde's decision, and now he was personally on his way to deliver the report to Khan N'buta.

Cassius isn't sure which he dreads more, the ilKhan's actions or what Stanislav will come up with to counter it....

------------------------

After more than an hour of arguing with his Khan, Cassius once more shouts, "No! Even you Stanislav would not dare to do such a thing?"

"And why should I not, I am simply acting according to the ilKhan's judgment am I not?"

"It is premature, there is to be a series of Trials beforehand."

"And where does it say that I cannot prevent the more ambitious amongst our enemies from taking more of what is ours by simply stating that due to current and ongoing events that any move will be treated as a violation of the spirit of those events that have not yet concluded?"

"You know what I mean Stanislav," Cassius's complexion achieving a coloration that it has not bore in years, "It is not the Clan Way."

"Which Way of Which Clan," the Khan asks, "you are as aware as I that each has its own interpretation of what it means to be Clan. If the ilKhan so desires that Treaty as it is written, then so it shall be...but none shall take advantage of our Clan while it is still in dispute, especially those that are still not fully aware of what it means to be of Clan Star Adder and the Star Adder Commonwealth States."

"After all, at the time when Clan Ghost Bear was negotiating with the Draconis Combine, at no time did they bypass the Bear Khan and seek out the ilKhan in order to seek an end by Trial, so why should this be treated any differently?"

"But this is different," the look on Cassius's face told Stanislav that he was having second thoughts, or at least considering other thoughts.

"Is it? The FWL sent a message to us first, and while their initial offer was turned down an alternative was provided, yet instead of making a counter-counter proposal, this Paul Masters went to the ilKhan in an attempt to make peace with all Clans when we are the only one that the FWL was in conflict with at the time, other than any possible FWL Units serving as part of the SLDF."

"The Coordinator could have done the same thing as it was only his Realm and the Ghost Bears involved, yet he chose the more honorable route and settled things with the one Clan that the DCMS was engaged against. And other than Coventry, I do not believe Clan Star Adder has faced, or had the opportunity to face, a DC Unit since Butler, if even then? And before that it was during the Great Refusal that Clan Star Adder last faced any FLWM Unit."

"So let us just say that I intend to keep the focus on the Treaty Trials and leave it at that."

"I still do not like it, but then I rarely like your ideas, and Founder preserve the Clan if I ever do."

Stanislav smiles and replies, "Seyla."

------------------------

Not long after, a series of HPG messages flash out from Addergrad, sent through the Network, carried by JumpShip and WarShip, dispersed throughout the whole of the Star Adder Commonwealth States. Every means of communication, from radio to the ChatterWeb, from courier to courier, the Khan's message was passed to every world that is part of the Star Adder Commonwealth States....

As Charlamagne Steiner, now an urKhan, the newest rank established by the Khan in order to lessen some of the burden of ruling over what is now the Star Adder commonwealth States, descended to the surface of Tharkad, former capital of the Lyran Commonwealth, he had time to consider his actions over the last few months, and what it all symbolizes....

As a symbol, Tharkad is immensely important to those that still have Lyran leanings, which is to be expected, for even after all these years, there are times where he still sees himself as Cloud Cobra, times like this in fact bring forth his teachings from days long gone.

While in his heart he knows he is Clan Star Adder, his memories are torn between the two Clans he has called and calls his own now. Khan N'buta, a lifelong Star Adder is well aware of symbols and their hold on an individual's or group's psyche, and the difficulty in changing those deeply ingrained beliefs that are associated with them...which is likely the reason he asked then Star Commander Charlamagne Steiner to undertake the task of bringing into the Adder's embrace those worlds that chose to follow him.

So while it has been a stressful learning experience, it has been one that has matured the young Clan Officer spiritually. After the disappointing loss at Coventry, though he did succeed in the Trial of Grievance against the FWL Admiral, now a bondsman to Clan Star Adder [ooc: unless the Admiral chose bondsref, in which case let me know and I'll edit this post], and also traveling with urKhan Steiner so as to learn and get a better understanding of what being Clan really means, Charlamagne is pleased that The Universe had seen that he was ready for this, even if he didn't at the time.

On the topic of symbols, and shifting of perceptions, Charlamagne had decided that he had to create a few of his own. A series of them that would reignite the hopes of the Warriors, Soldiers and Civilians that follow him. He had to morph Relics of their past into Icons of their conjoined present and slowly merging future.

To that end he had conducted an ancient Terran Blue Water Naval Ritual involving the renaming of WarShips. Sailors, regardless of their era, are still a rather superstitious lot, which in some ways has worked in Charlamagne's favor when he felt out the attitudes of the various crew and Captains of those vessels.

Thus while at Coventry, between Trials and whenever time permitted he enacted the Ceremony, most of them via a very roundabout HPG link with Alarion and the majority of the former Lyran, now Star Adder, Naval assets still stationed there.

Charlamagne's memory drifts back to that time, and the words he spoke:

In the name of all who have sailed aboard this ship in the past, and in the name of all who may sail aboard her in the future, we invoke the primordial gods of the wind and the sea to favor us with their blessing today.

Mighty Neptune, king of all that moves in or on the waves; and mighty Aeolus, guardian of the winds and all that blows before them.

We offer you our thanks for the protection you have afforded this vessel in the past. We voice our gratitude that she has always found shelter from tempest and storm and enjoyed safe passage to port.

Now, wherefore, we submit this supplication, that the name whereby this vessel has hitherto been known as the LCWS Wieselflink, be struck and removed from your records.

Further, we ask that when she is again presented for blessing with another name, she shall be recognized and shall be accorded once again the selfsame privileges she previously enjoyed.

In return for which, we rededicate this vessel to your domain in full knowledge that she shall be subject as always to the immutable laws of the gods of the wind and the sea.

In consequence whereof, and in good faith, we seal this pact with a libation offered according to the hallowed ritual of the sea.

I bid hail !! Aeolus and Neptune !
And seek your benefaction upon this vessel ,
May the name she carried before, be gone as the winds of yore,
Having served the former master with honor.
I now, with deep respect, petition you royal beings ,
To give this vessel's new hailing and her next voyages, your kindnesses.

Oh mighty and great ruler of the seas and oceans, to whom all ships and we who venture upon your vast domain are required to pay homage, implore you in your graciousness to take unto your records and recollection this worthy vessel hereafter and for all time known as the SACS Hierophant, guarding her with your mighty arm and trident and ensuring her of safe and rapid passage throughout her journeys within your realm.

In appreciation of your munificence, dispensation and in honor of your greatness, we offer these libations to your majesty and your court.

And even though Charlamagne, like most Clanners, are not fond of alcoholic drink, he consumed his share, one glass, of the champagne as dictated by the ritual. The tricky part was pouring the rest into the void of the Stellar Sea, from west to east, but it was accomplished, by Charlamagne himself even though the Ritual didn't state he had to do such.

The next step in the renaming ceremony was to appease the gods of the winds, to assure fair winds and smooth seas. Because the four winds are brothers, it is permissible to invoke them all at the same time, however, during the ceremony, Charlamagne addressed each by name:

Oh mighty rulers of the winds, through whose power our frail vessels traverse the wild and faceless deep, we implore you to grant this worthy vessel SACS Hierophant the benefits and pleasures of your bounty, ensuring us of your gentle ministration according to our needs.

Facing north, Charlamagne poured a generous libation of champagne into a champagne flute and flung it to the "North", invoking the First Brother of the Winds:

Great Boreas, majestic ruler of the North Wind, grant us permission to use your mighty powers in the pursuit of our lawful endeavors, ever sparing us the overwhelming scourge of your frigid breath.

Then "West", a like amount of champagne was flung "West" as he sought the blessings of Zephyrus:

Great Zephyrus, exalted ruler of the West Wind, grant us permission to use your mighty powers in the pursuit of our lawful endeavors, ever sparing us the overwhelming scourge of your wild breath.

And repeated again, facing "East":

Great Eurus, esteemed ruler of the East Wind, grant us permission to use your mighty powers in the pursuit of our lawful endeavors, ever sparing us the overwhelming scourge of your mighty breath.

Then finally, to the "South":

Great Notus, judicious ruler of the South Wind, grant us permission to use your mighty powers in the pursuit of our lawful endeavors, ever sparing us the overwhelming scourge of your scalding breath.

While Charlamagne would have much preferred to be present on the other Ships, circumstances sometimes does not allow one the luxury of being where one desires, so at Alarion, the Captains of those vessels performed the deeds as he spoke the words, the only changes were for the Names of the WarShips, from as they were during the height of the Lyran Commonwealth, to the now, as part of the Star Adder Commonwealth Navy.

In the end, the LCWS Angela Franks was rechristened the SACS Empress;
the LCWS Hermes Farnsworth became the SACS Magus;
LCWS Donegal to SACS Emperor;
LCWS Skye to SACS Star;
and the LCWS Solaris became the SACS Fortune;
all Major Arcana of the Tarot, and now WarShips of the Star Adder Commonwealth, serving in the Steiner Protectorate.

In addition, urKhan Charlamagne Steiner rechristened the two Lyran Naval Expeditionary Fleets into Task Forces, later to be reorganized into true TF's, being as how each was currently comprised of only one JumpShip, their attendant DropShips and the ASF's they carried, but that is something that can wait until a more opportune time.

Much as the death of the elder Phoenix is reborn as a hatchling from its own ashes, another Commonwealth is reborn from the shattered and splintered worlds of its predecessor...the Mjolnir and Fox Class WarShips of the Lyran Commonwealth are reborn, though whose task is still the same..to protect those who cannot protect themselves from the Scavenger States that seek to devour it.

*For Interstellar Travel, "North" is towards the Bow of the Ship, with the Stern being "South", Starboard equals "East" and Port representing "West" [ooc: I pretty much made up this last bit, but it would make sense being as in Space there really are no North, South, etc]

Amminadav
Freimen [ooc: city of my own creation]
Public Meeting Chambers
Golden Dawn Catholic Church

The crowd gathered murmurs amongst itself, the topic being that of the Free Worlds League current invasion of their home. Everyone has heard the announcement from Khan N'Buta, while not all agreed with it, most could see the reasoning behind it.

The FWL, a longtime foe of the Lyran Commonwealth, is doing nothing more than picking at the corpse of that once proud Realm. If they just wanted worlds, there is the whole of the Rim Worlds Republic for them to flex their military might against.

However, they are here now, far from their borders, and either circled around the RWR Periphery Borders or had struck a deal with the Devil Adam, and gained free passage through their territory in order to rape the Steiner Protectorate of the Star Adder Commonwealth States.

The Free Worlds League is continuing the Succession Wars, though this time against a realm that has been through a traumatic ordeal, and is just now barely in the process of setting itself right.

To those members of the congregation, the Captain-General is the ultimate coward, no longer possessing the will to wage a War against a deserving enemy. Instead preferring to loot the dead and dying like a common scavenger.

As the conversations continue, the Church's Priest, Father James Reigle, his eyes glassy, yet focused, his lips moving in near constant silent prayer, the Colonel tags on his collar set to either side of his priestly one.

A message is passed between the two, and after reading, Father Reigle speaks softly to his aide, "Are you sure of this," his eyes wide with bliss, "are you positive of these dates."

The aide simple nods, to which the Father replies, rather loudly, "Hallelujah!"

Needless to say, the Chamber becomes silent, questioning and hopeful stares greet the Father as he returns his gaze to his fellows, friends and flock. Serene calm now visible in his eyes, though the fervor of religious faith, madness to some, is stronger than ever. To this, sighs of relief and equally intense looks are shared between the man and the people, the vast majority of them still in their duty fatigues, still displaying their service to the former Lyran Commonwealth.

"Brothers and Sisters in Arms," the Father's voice near ecstatic, "Our Lord Khan is one of the Chosen of God, and Brother to our Savior Jesus Christ. The urKhan, Charlamagne Steiner, is also one with the Savior and Holy Ghost."

He holds the paper high, displaying it much like a Religious Artifact, which in his mind it is, as Holy as the Bible itself, "Many before have been Blessed to share the Dates of Birth and Rebirth as their own with our Holy Son. None before though were present to bring us into His Divine Light when Sodom Fell. None before offered to pull us from the rumble and ashes of Gomorrah as it crumbled and burned around us."

"Today is different, today Holy Brother Stanislav has been confirmed as sharing the Date of Birth as Jesus, December 25th. UrKhan Steiner, is not only the Spiritual Rebirth of our Commonwealth, but is a Reincarnation of Lord Jesus as well, Born on the Day of Him rising from his tomb after being crucified, just as our Beloved Lyran Commonwealth was Crucified by its own Deadly Sins as well as the Sins of Lucifer's Spawn Adam Satanus."

"Our own Sins may prevent us from ever basking in His Holy radiance, however our sacrifice, our lives may buy time for His Holy Servants to gather their Righteous Armies and free our Demonically Held Brethren from within the grasp of The Spawn's Minions walking in the guise of Free Worlders and their Hell Dwelling Mercenaries."

"Clan Wolf-in-Exile served to prove that not all Clanners were as painted by the House Liars and the Heretical ComStar and Word of Blake. The Apocalypse foretold has arrived, we have seen and experienced Plague, Famine and Pestilence. And now our Savior is engaged in War, a War with those who are Corruption Incarnate, these Wolverines."

"They hide on Terra, cradle of humanity, using the lives and souls of the Satanic League Defense Force, their allied Diabolic Hell Lords and now manipulating the Foul Worlds League into attacking the True Bastion of Faith and Light, the Bearers of His Holy Words and Banner, Clan Star Adder and their Commonwealth States."

"My life is insignificant. My soul corroded. My actions will lead to the Salvation of millions, not only here but elsewhere in His Creation. To this end I will give all that I have and all that I am to see His Will done."

"I will not order any to follow, I can only ask. Will you fight so Their Will be done? Will you die so Their Will be done? Will you join me in putting the Fear of God into the heathens that dare desecrate Their Sacred Realm?"

A minute passes, five, then ten, the Father crying as he pleads with his Congregation, his Soldiers, to bring Hell to the Invaders, and send them back to the Nether Pits from whence they crawled and oozed.

Fifteen minutes have gone by now, the Father beginning to lose hope, until he sees one Private kneel, then cross herself, followed by a Major, then three Corporals. Soon all have
knelt, asking forgiveness for their Sins, and as one they stand, Parade Ground Proud, and one word is uttered...

"Amen."

With that, portions of the Amminadav Milita march out of their Church, their Sanctuary, and continue on towards their base and equipment, their leader, their Shepherd, at the head.

Their approach and passing is marked by song, their voices filled with hope and despair;

Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
with the cross of Jesus going on before.
Christ, the royal Master, leads against the foe;
forward into battle see his banners go!

Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
with the cross of Jesus going on before.

At the sign of triumph Satan's host doth flee;
on then, Christian soldiers, on to victory!
Hell's foundations quiver at the shout of praise;
brothers, lift your voices, loud your anthems raise.

Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
with the cross of Jesus going on before.

Like a mighty army moves the church of God;
brothers, we are treading where the saints have trod.
We are not divided, all one body we,
one in hope and doctrine, one in charity.

Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
with the cross of Jesus going on before.

Crowns and thrones may perish, kingdoms rise and wane,
but the church of Jesus constant will remain.
Gates of hell can never gainst that church prevail;
we have Christ's own promise, and that cannot fail.

Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
with the cross of Jesus going on before.

Onward then, ye people, join our happy throng,
blend with ours your voices in the triumph song.
Glory, laud, and honor unto Christ the King,
this through countless ages men and angels sing.

Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
with the cross of Jesus going on before.

As the move through the city, they are joined by friends and family, many in tears as they know that few, if any, will return. A resolve fills the hearts of those who have no family in service, that even should their Defenders of the Faith Perish, the fight will continue, until either the invaders are driven out, or their home is reduced to ash, of no use to them, rendered as barren as their souls and lives must be if they must bring the horror of War to a world that has chosen another

Whatever the outcome of the upcoming battle, Amminadav shall be the Purgatory that holds the Faithless of the Free Worlds League until His Final Judgment releases them.

Two bodies lay intertwined amongst twisted and damp bed linens. The male appears in his mid to late thirties, his body is covered by a network of scars, the source of which is many and varied. His most noticeable series covers his upper back, neck and head, due to which was devoid of hair...the result of a severe fire and toxic fumes that nearly killed him over a year ago during a Space Battle halfway around the Periphery Border of the Known Inner Sphere, and were it not for the young woman wrapped around him at this moment, he would have died that day...

The young woman, also sporting her own share of scars, was slender with short cropped hair, shaved at the temples. Her head nestled in the crook of his arm and her left hand set against his chest, allowing her to feel his heartbeat, its pace nearly matching her own...

"I have a question for you," the man says, "is love this feeling I have. A sense of being complete when I am with you, and a longing I cannot fathom when I am not? Is love when my heart races when I hear you speak, and my skin tingles when I feel your breath upon it? Is it love this sensation of not wanting times such as this to end, and for the universe to stop in place so I no longer have to share you with anyone else?"

The woman smiles as she gazes up into his eyes, "I'm not sure, but you just described my emotions as well. I've thought I was in love in the past, but it was never this intense, this all consuming...," she pauses, "it never felt this right."

"Aye, that it does," he replies, "why The Founder thought that such would be a detriment to Warriors I do not understand. With you by my side, I feel invincible, yet if you were threatened I would storm Terra alone in an effort to see you safe. I can now see how the Military Forces of the Inner Sphere felt when the Clans first came out of the Deep Periphery."

"They threw themselves before superior skills and technology in order to slow the onslaught, protecting their loved ones form the threat they thought, and were told, we were."

"To be fair, you are. You are a threat, a threat to what they are familiar with, and few people truly welcome change. The vast majority fear it, and only accept it when there is no other alternative. This Steiner Protectorate is the first major shift in their way of thinking, granted it may be strictly by means of name recognition, but it is a start. I seriously can't believe that any are naive enough to believe that it's a pseudo-Lyran Commonwealth in the making."

"You and Charlamagne will have to work fast and hard in order to convince them that the Clan Way is a step up from what they know. The hardest ones to convince will be the Corporations and those that controlled them. Few are going to like having their installations nationalized, and fewer still are going to appreciate losing their material and monetary fortunes rendered essentially valueless."

"Give them a reason to see this transition as a challenge. Perhaps the creation of Civilian Awards, something that enhances one's prestige. I know, I know it's not Clan, but they are not quite Clan yet, they need time to adjust and adapt, just as I did."

"Give them an alternative way of measuring their self worth other than financial gain, and they will come to view Clan Star Adder and the Star Adder Commonwealth States as their own. The smart ones will also work damn hard to prove their worth to the Clan and how by strengthening it also strengthens their place in it."

As she speaks, the man stares at her in wonder, "And how is it that you know this?"

She giggles, "I grew up around their types before I was old enough to enlist. I watched my mother play one off against another in order to get what the Magistracy needed out of them. They likely knew they were being played, as well as what needed to be done, but public perception and reputations are powerful concepts. They could not be seen or thought of as weak and easily manipulated, so they too played the game in order to satisfy egos and vanity."

"And like it or not, the Clans have the same mindset though from a different perspective. Clan Star Adder is, to an extent, different. While what little I know of the others seems to paint their members as more focused on self honor, the Adders and a few others, place the Clan's honor higher. Your Warriors, and even a number of Civilians, are willing to sacrifice their own honor if such would preserve the Clan's."

He frowns at this revelation, but does not speak against it, for he has served long, seen and experienced enough to now know that what she says is true...disturbingly so.

The woman though does not tell her companion everything, for while she believes she is in love with him, and he with her, he is still very much a Clansman. This Macleod Connery may not be able to accept something that is common between lovers in the Inner Sphere.

It's times like this when a girl would like to speak to her mother, but Kassandra Centrella's mother is hundreds of light years distant, and even though her Clan and her mother's Realm are friendly, it's a strained friendship currently what with all changes of fortune across the Inner Sphere.

Still, being able to tell her mother, Emma Centrella, that she has found a man who loves her for what, not who, she is...and that she is pregnant, carrying the Magestrix's grandchild, would be of great comfort.

Stanislav was tired, he had pulled "an all nighter" reviewing the damage and casualty figures from the Battle of Coventry, including the toll of death and destruction inflicted upon the civilians of the world when the FWL Navy Bombarded the planet's surface with indiscriminate abandon.

He could understand had they targeted Military targets, or even the Infrastructure that supported Military construction, but they hadn't, instead population centers bore the brunt and felt the wrath of a petulant, senile pretender that the Captain-General had become since his days as the First Lord of the Successor League.

Stanislav was beginning to wonder if he was even calling the shots anymore within his own Realm, being a figurehead, a mere puppet to one who's skill at manipulation was so subtle that it was hard to detect. Or perhaps worse yet, a power struggle within the Free Worlds League has come into being. The League has a long history of such internal Civil Wars, and to be honest, Stanislav is not sure which he fears more...an unknown Master, or the disintegration of yet another Inner Sphere Nation, one that tends to come out stronger than it was before the conflict.

Granted with the latter it might provide his Clan and its Commonwealth the opportunity to reclaim what had been taken through deceit, and possible expand its influence deeper into the heart of the former Lyran Commonwealth. Images and footage of what was done at Coventry would serve as a strong motivator and Propaganda Weapon, but things in the Steiner Protectorate need time to settle and coalesce into a more unified whole, it has to if it is to be a true Commonwealth.

Rosaleen, his young assistant, enters, Cassius Adderson not more than half a step behind her, and before she could speak, the Paladin of the Adderson Paragonic Line and Intelligence Adjutant for the Inner Sphere, glares at her, prompting her quick exit.

Cassius closes the door and strides over to one of the chairs in front of the Khan's desk, his cane held firmly in his left hand, the charade of its need being discarded in private between the two friends.

"Stanislav," he says gruffly, as if to lecture the younger Warrior, but at the last second, he breaks into a wide grin, "you are not going to believe this," as he passes a paper report across to the Khan, as he fills a glass with iced water and sips at it while his protege reads.

Stanislav N'Buta, often reluctant Khan of Clan Star Adder, reads slowly, having learned in the past not to skim any reports or document placed before him, feels the tension and sadness that has gripped him for most of the evening trickle away.

Several times he is tempted to stop, but is motioned into continuing by the man in front of him, which he does, for he is anxious to reach its conclusion. Finally he does come to the last punctuation mark, and looks up to ask, "Is this accurate Cassius?"

"Aff," the IAIS replies, "both Scientist adKhans and the Watch Operatives assigned to all projects have confirmed. Since those Lyran worlds that have become the Steiner Protectorate some six to eight months ago, the Clan as a whole has seen a huge technological renaissance. Apparently the fresh minds, and imagination, from those worlds inspired our native Scientists, who in turn took risks that had previously been denied them by the Lyran Military Hierarchy."

"And when combined with the prizes gleaned from the Archer, as well as those brought in by the Steiner Protectorate, Clan Star Adder and the Star Adder Commonwealth States has nearly half a dozen, combined, new BattleMech and OmniMech designs incorporating technology form both sources."

"On top of that, the efforts of all Scientists from across the Clan, especially those that had been implicated to some degree in the Conspiracy, has elevated the overall, though there are still some areas that lag, the technological levels of the Steiner Protectorate to near Clan equality. Within two to four months, at least on a technical stage, there will be no difference between the Protectorates."

While Cassius has a great deal of confidence in his Khan and his abilities, he still tries to remain somewhat detached as his own job requires it, however this situation is one where he lets himself go, and feels a great deal of pride and honor to be serving this inspirational and visionary Khan, "In my opinion, I feel that the Scientists have earned an easing of the restrictions that they have been working under, even those that survived the Purge and have been viewed with suspicion ever since. The Watch will continue overseeing all projects of course, but I think they have earned some form of pardon from you and the rest of the Clan for pulling this off in such a short time."

Stanislav is somewhat shocked at his Adjutant's words, they're completely unexpected, but after reading the report, not unwarranted, "By this," he says as he hold up the papers, "I am in agreement with you. Later I shall address the whole Clan, specifically the Scientist Caste and praise their efforts during these trying times. Your Watch will have to determine those who have worked the hardest and are most deserving of individual and personal recognition, whether they be of Homeworld or Inner Sphere origin. Those who qualify, by your standards, will gain a very special prize indeed, what that will be I do not know yet, but something will present itself by the time you have sorted through all the possibilities."

Cassius, beaming, simply answers, "It will be done my Khan," before getting to his feet and departing. Rosaleen, entering again a few minutes after the Paladin leaves, and asks, her eyes directed to the floor as is her habit, "Is there anything I can get for you my Khan?"

Stanislav, looks to her and smiles, "Yes dear Rosaleen, cancel and reschedule my appointments that call within the next two to three hours. I have a cause to celebrate, and you shall assist me."

Rosaleen looks up, her eyes sparkling with a smile of her own, she claps her hands and squeals as she turns on her heels and does as she was told, in less than twenty minutes she returns to her Khan, locking the door behind her.

For the next three hours her world is limited to the space enclosed within those walls, and she is happier than she has been for many weeks. If she could only work up the courage to tell the Khan how she really feels....and what she truly needs.

Charlamagne Steiner, as uncomfortable as he has been ever since he accepted the Khan's suggestion to try and sway part of the old Lyran Commonwealth over to Clan Star Adder, is even more so now, for today will be the first time he will be able to address the whole of the Protectorate, which now bears his Bloodname, as well as the whole of the Star Adder Commonwealth States as he has been informed.

He is not the speaker that Khan N'Buta is, nor is he the visionary, Charlamagne is simply a Warrior, though lately he hasn't been feeling like such, his Fate and responsibilities have taken him far from who he was, and only that same Fate knows what he is to become. Several times he has been asked why he subscribes to such an antiquated belief system, his answer is always the same, The Cards are but a different tool for interpreting the Word and Will of the Universe. Though instead of hearing someone else give them voice, or put them into writing, and trusting that they tell me the Truth, it is left to myself. Thus the one to blame for an inaccurate reading or misinterpretation lies with just one, not generations.

Now, few ask anymore, looking to him for answers, and that is something he has tolerated, however, today perhaps, he can convince most to look to the Clan to determine how best to improve it through their actions, ideas and beliefs.

A signal from the other side of the camera activates the small light above it, indicating that they are ready, all links and relays are in place, the time has come for Charlamagne Steiner, urKhan for the Steiner Protectorate of the Star Adder Commonwealth States to address the people of his Clan and Nation...

"Fellow citizens of Clan Star Adder and the Commonwealth States, I am Charlamagne Steiner. A simple Warrior who Fate, Fortune and yourselves haven chosen for the position I hold now. By your will, acting in concert with the Universe, I am here. It would be fair to say that most chose Clan Star Adder for Hope, a different path for themselves and their descendants."

"Also likely is the concept that many had is one where they had no say in their own Destiny, again, such can not be claimed any longer. In many ways I envy you all, you have a freedom I lack. You are free to choose your own Way, while my Way was predetermined. I go and do where I must for the sake of, initially, the Clan, and now your welfare must be placed before and above my won."

"For me, the Clan, neg, the Steiner Protectorate and the whole of the Star Adder Commonwealth States must and will be my priority. When I first placed myself in line for the Archonship of the Lyran Commonwealth, it was because of the familiarity, a sense of comfort and security that holding that it would give those with a history of being Lyran."

"However, as time passed, and events unfolded, more and more was it shown that my being Archon is not the right Way for either of us. Not so long ago I had traveled to Tharkad to address that specific point, though unfortunately a surprise attack, one of brutality, denied me that opportunity."

"Today though, with the miraculous efforts put forth by the Merchants and Technicians throughout the Commonwealth States, I am able to state what I was not able then: I, Charlamagne Steiner, am removing myself from the line of Succession for the Archonship of the Lyran Commonwealth."

"That Title is one of the Past, and we must all look and move towards the future. A future that will test all for sometime yet, as it has been testing us for months now. While this decision will disappoint some, anger others, it is one meant to forge a new, unified identity for everyone."

"Just as you still see yourselves as Lyran, I see myself as Clan, and that cannot continue. In order for the Commonwealth States to prosper we must envision and pass along to following generations that one tenet that has always been at the core of the Star Adder belief system. That together, working, researching, and for many, dying, we can and will become stronger as One Nation, rather than remaining separate factions within ourselves."

"Such is what has led to the downfall of not only the old Lyran Nation, but several Clans as well. We can remain as individuals, with individual dreams and desires, however a determination and serious effort by all must be put into ensuring that those individuals do not weaken and endanger the whole."

"Several examples already exist of such iron will amongst our two former hostile Realms. First are the Scientists, working together they have accomplished in less than a year what the whole of the Inner Sphere, on the average, took over a decade to accomplish: technological equality. Simply put, the level of technical expertise and capability within the Steiner Protectorate is the same as the other Protectorates."

"Second example, this broadcast. Through ways that I do not understand, the Merchant and Technician Castes have managed to circumvent the Interdiction imposed upon you, allowing near instantaneous communications between all worlds within the Star Adder Commonwealth States borders."

"And while not as flashy or spectacular, the Laborers have been working non-stop building improvements across the Protectorate. From providing the foods we all eat, new factories, atmospheric and water treatment facilities, HPG hubs, and more, they give us all the means by which we can do our respective jobs, so that we can ensure and enhance their ability to do theirs."

"It as a collective where we are strong, where we can overcome any obstacle Fate places before us. As one Nation, one People, we will accomplish much, and remind the rest of the Inner Sphere that to think and treat the Steiner Protectorate as less than what we are, will bring down the wrath of the whole of the Star Adder Commonwealth States upon them."

"I can merely lead, and without you, without your support I lead nothing. You made and make me what I am, and I can but do the best I can under the circumstances. Patience in great measure is required by all for us to emerge from the current troubles, after which we will prepare for the next difficulty to be placed before us. Life itself is a series of experiences, good, bad and horrid. It is by overcoming or enjoying those times that shape one's Soul, so while being a Warrior is my Heart, and my Body is the Star Adder Commonwealth States, it is you, the civilians of the SACS, that are my Soul."

With that pronouncement, the broadcast feed ends, and after remaining still and silent for a few moments, Charlamagne addresses the Producer, "How was that?"

"Excellent," she replies, he face flushed and chest swollen with emotion, and she's not the only one feeling that way, "that last piece sounded sincere."

"Aff, that is because I was and am," Charlamagne says, "it was the only portion that I had not rehearsed or prepared. It just came out."

"Well, if that was spur of the moment, then color me impressed and touched. For the first time since, damn, not sure when, I actually feel part of something greater, something better. I actually want to help make things better instead of reporting on all the bad crap in this life."

"Tragedy may get the ratings, but it's been leaving me feeling empty for years. I'm tired of it, and want it to end," she concludes.

With a sigh, Charlamagne just adds, "As do I, as do I."

MaCleod Connery and his wife Kassandra Centrella-Connery looked upon their child cradled in her arms, the relief plainly visible on his face at his wife's survival. After the near disastrous miscarriage she suffered during the FWL negotiations when news arrived of the Combine and Suns attack, the shock put her into premature labor.

While Kassandra lived, barely, the twins she was carrying did not, and were it not for the persistence and stubbornness of the Arluna doctors were largely responsible for her eventual recovery.

The negotiations were subsequently put on hold, and as soon as she was cleared to travel the couple returned to Clan Star Adder Territory. Kassandra was adamant about trying again for another child, despite the risks involved. Complications from her experience carried a high risk for both mother and child not surviving the ordeal.

She though felt the need to prove, even if only to herself, that she could bear and raise a child, and so long as that child was fathered by this one man, she would make repeated attempts, even make a deal with the Devil to do so.

Thus, less than three years after the loss of their first children, countless attempts at conceiving, the loss of one more child, and a four month medically induced coma after the last miscarriage, she and her husband welcomed their daughter, Emily Lynn Hope Centrella-Connery, on April 27th, 3071

(ooc: year may be off since Im really bad at keeping track of dates)

-------------------------------------------------------

Merchant adKhan Wallace Mart sat back in his chair, letting out a long sigh, the Hellion deal finally concluded, taking a moment to breath before reaching into his desk for a bottle of his favorite scotch and a glass, "Time for a bit of celebration methinks," he mumbles as he pours a double shot of the dark amber fluid.

The trade wasn't ideal, the Hellions gaining a bit more than they gave up, the result should please the Khan nonetheless, and when combined with the System improvements ordered by the Khan and being carried out with fervor by the Labor, Technician and Merchant Castes, the Clan should only lose short-term.

In the meantime, his wife, adKhan Kay Mart, was still trying to get details on a similar deal with the Diamond Sharks. One even more bold than what he had just undertaken and finished.

Before he was half through his drink, a message appeared on his office monitor, the sender was not unexpected as he had contacted them some months earlier regarding the Lend-Lease Act and its continued need.

Their offer was more in favor, at least to him, of his Clan as he reviewed the information presented, a smile creasing his lips as he did. Yes, this one should be easily and quickly a done deal.

The loss along the edge being a minor issue, as more would be gained in the interior. Yes, Wallace agreed to the proposal, sent off his response and another missive to the Khan strongly recommending that he too accept it, as this deal should nearly make up for the losses sustained in the Hellion Trade, as well as those projected for the Shark Deal.

-------------------------------------------------------

Lysander Centrella had done much in his time as part of Clan Star Adder, not only had he entered their Warrior Training, he had passed easily, defeating three opponents, and nearly a fourth in his Trial of Position. Such a feat, especially by one that was openly called freeborn and Spheroid in not so friendly ways, silencing the critics that he was inferior.

Once he had his Rank, he quickly sought out the most vocal against his placement and inclusion, issued a series of Grievances that same day and once more proved his worth to his peers and superiors, while he may have been born on the far side of the Inner Sphere, his accomplishments have shown that the means of one's birth means little in determining the skill of a single Warrior.

Lysander Centrella is the newest ristar of Clan Star Adder, his background making him unique amongst Clan Star Adder. Granted there have been others that have embraced the Clan way of Inner Sphere origin, few though have made such a smooth transition as he: Phelan and the Wolves, Ragnar and the Wolves then Bears are the two most noteworthy.

By deed he is Clan, by word he is Clan, by choice he is Clan.

-------------------------------------------------------

Khan N'Buta has not had as much good news as he would have liked, as he has gotten used to, but with Lysander he sees another opportunity, and with MaCleod marrying Lysander's sister, on top of Bruce Dickenson, former Ambassador to the Magestry of Canopus (having resigned from his position shortly after making his vows), and the Magestrix becoming man and wife, Clan Star Adder is more closely connected to an Inner Sphere/Periphery State than any other Clan.

And if what the rumors are true, then there may be the possibility of another union of sorts between Clan Star Adder and another Inner Sphere Power....

A sidebar note in regards the above.

Lysander Centrella was born in Dec 3065 and is the twin brother of Crystalla Centralla.  Their mother is Naomi Centralla, and their father is a Snow Raven Star Colonel (bloodnamed Smoke Jaguar captured by the Ravens and made abtakha by them).  The 'deed' as such was done on Tharkad during the Star League Conference.  The Star Colonel was part of the Snow Raven delegation which had been sent to Tharkad as observers.

Following the twins birth on Canopus IV, the boy was sent to the Canopian Embassy and raised there (arrived on the Danai Battlegroup).  The plot was that he would journey through the Star Adder warrior system, attaining knowledge and experience with them.  At some time in the future he might return to the Magistracy to assume some sort of senior leadership position.  But that is still very much up in the air and dependent on what we find 'on the other side'.

The above plotline was formed around cycle 15 and has of course grown from there.

The lead Scientist on the joint program being conducted simultaneously in the Inner Sphere and Homeworld portions of the Star Adder Commonwealth States, a native of the old Lyran Commonwealth herself, was extremely pleased with the progress overall the various teams have made on the Project.

However the Heavy aspect of the Project was being difficult to say the least, even after several years of work, simulations, holo-prototypes and whatnot, it has met with consistent failure. She feels that they're close to a breakthrough, but it still eludes them, so until someone has a flash of inspiration, she's ordered the teams to work on possible future variations of some popular and/or iconic models from the Inner Sphere.

Granted some are based off intelligence reports of a model as no example on hand to work from, though she hopes that by thinking on what something might be will prove to be the factor that brings a new perspective to the Heavy. And if it does, and the Khan gives the go-ahead on others, they'll be somewhat ahead of the game so to speak having some concepts already on hand.

Headquarters, 62nd Mechanised Assault
Copperhead Military Training Ground, Addergrad

July 3086

"Star Captain Gerhard Aliychuk reporting, Star Colonel."

Star Colonel Everard looked up from his computer at the Star Captain standing to attention in front of him.  He had been expecting the officer, and also the rest of the replacement contingent from Onverwacht next week, but if they were here now, all the good.  'Take a seat Star Captain Alichuk," he said as he gestured to the camp stool standing idle off to one side in his tent.  All the 62nd was undertaking two weeks of infantry minor tactics, including the mechwarriors and tank crewmen.  Nothing like getting one's hands dirty, the former commander of the 62nd, and who was also his father, had told him.  On more than one occasion.   Speaking of which, he made a mental note to send a message to him when they returned from this exercise.  Nathan DeLaurel was currently on Alarion as a senior instructor at the Military Academy there,  Specializing in strategic operations in rough terrain.

Disdaining to punch up Aliychuk's profile on the noteputer in front of him, as he had studied the Star Captain's record upon being informed that he was being sent out here, he liked what he saw.  A warrior suited to combat and leadership.  Steady, and with an intelligence lurking within those eyes.  As one of the first tanker genotypes, he had done well in his sibko where a number of his peers had failed and had gone on to claim a Star Commander's position in his final Trial of Position.  Two years in Beta Galaxy, a bloodname from one of the former lines that had been resurrected by Khan Cobb, and now he was here, replacing Star Captain Kennedy as the commander of the 62nd oversized conventional forces.

The 62nd Mechanised Assault had remained within the Star Adder Commonwealth States for several years before moving to Addergrad to assist the Adders in training up their conventional forces.  Especially their formerly much maligned tank units.  The armoured units in the Star Adder Touman had experienced a solid rise in combat capability over fifteen years ago with the sudden influx of a number of former LCAF combat veterans, however most of these veterans were either long gone or nearing retirement age.  Which is where the 62nd had come into it's own.  In working with the former Lyrans and some of the more progressive Star Adder warriors in designing a training regime to lift the combat abilities of conventional forces with the Star Adder Touman and the Adder Protectorate.  Excellent combat vehicles such as the Manteufful Omnitank was prevalent, as was a number of the better Horse designs such as the Hephaestus, Bellona, Enyo and Athena.  All traded to the Star Adders many years in the past.  Through the years, the 62nd had remained in location, still a Horse Alliance unit, but permanently stationed in Star Adder territory as part of the long standing relationship the two had cemented in the days of the Terran Hegemony war.

"... to summarise, my Khan, I have deployed two conventional supernova's to the Adder worlds of Xagyg and Blue Hole, along with supporting 'Mech and Elemental binaries to continue the training regimes instituted previously.  The other two conventional supernova's remain here on Addergrad with the rest of my command, cycling through the Star Adder units stationed on-planet."

Star Colonel Everard paused for a moment as if to allow his far off commander time to digest what he had stated, before continuing.  "The Star Adder convention troops, and even their battlearmour elements, have come a long way.  It has helped that a sizeable number of ex-Lyran soldiers have filled the ranks of their non-mech forces, bringing with them their experience and knowledge of tank warfare.  I can safely say that within two years Clan Star Adder tank and conventional infantry forces will be trained up to our standard and should, as combat allows, produce fine warriors."

"My next brief details the progress of Star Captain Gerhard Aliychuk.  Since arriving mid last year, he has proven his worth as overall commander of my conventional troops.  Excellent leadership skills, a superior tactican on the field of battle.  I understand that several other warriors of his bloodline are coming into their own now, and if they shape up to be as well rounded as Star Captain Aliychuk, I believe the continued superiority of our Clan in tank warfare is assured."

The vastness around Minderoo was torn asunder by the silent arrival of several Ships, three WarShips accompanied by a half dozen JumpShips, all fully loaded with DropShips. A full score plus half again as more detached, most disgorging Fighters of assorted Classes once they were a safe distance from their transports, the remaining placed themselves between the shielding screen of Fighters and the WarShips.

Once all were settled in their positions, a signal was sent from the largest of the WarShips towards the planet, "This conflict for not only this world, but for all formerly Lyran, now Adder, Systems has gone on long enough.  While our two Nations are engaged in political double talk and negotiations at ending this War, we both know that such dealings could take weeks, if not months at being finalized. Hence I mean to see it end here! Today! Our people have bled long enough for no real gain for any other than undertakers and gravediggers. "

"Thus I, Charlamagne Seiner issue challenge you for all the Systems contested between the Free Worlds League, Clan Star Adder and the Star Adder Commonwealth States. Should you prevail, then you will be able to deliver not only those Systems without further and wasteful bloodshed, but myself as your bondsman. Just as should I prove victorious, the Free Worlds League will withdraw all of its forces from Adder Commonwealth territory, with you becoming my bondsman. A one on one Trial that will settle our leader's respective dispute...at least for now."

"I know that you are not regular military, instead being mercenary, but after having several dealings with officers of the Free Worlds League Military, I have found them lacking in honor and integrity. Things I believe you have in ample supply, for without such, you would not be able to continue in your chosen profession as none would be able to trust you at your word. And again, while not regular military, you are still a Marik by Birth and Blood, giving you some pull over others."

"What say you Captain Marik, do you wish to end this War, or do you desire to lose more of not only your own Warriors, but those of your brother's as well?"

Kristen Marik was not only surprised at the arrival at such a large Clan force, but of who was addressing her. His tone was one of deadly calm and detachment, a sure indication of the seriousness of the situation. She's fully aware of the bounty that has been placed on his person, she may be a mercenary, but as he said, she's still a Marik and she has more than a few connections in Parliament and elsewhere that keep her informed of events and dealings.

She looked around at her fellow Krushers, like her all were tired, and more than a few wounded to some degree, as for nigh onto eight months they've been squaring off against the Donegal Jaegers and Donegal Guards, and everyone involved has taken a beating, but her foes have refused to call it quits, doing just as they promised, tying her unit in place until Adder reinforcements could arrive, and arrive they did, in force and then some.

As she met the gaze of each of her junior officers present, he or she answered her unasked question in their own way...a shift of the eyes, a tug on an ear, a grimace, etcetera, until she knew what she had to do. For as much as she hated to admit it, that damn Snake was right, neither Realm has accomplished much except deplete their own strength, and the rumormill was rampant with troubles within the League's Military and Political Heirarchy. Of course such was nearly always the case with a Nation such as the Free Worlds League, its histroy is testament to that, but this time, this time there was something that made her believe they were more than just rumor and innuendo.

And even though her and her brother haven't seen eye to eye lately, he's still family, and she has every intention of being by his side to support him by whatever means she is able. Her decision made, she nods her head to her Com Officer, "Not sure what your rank is Charlamagne, last I heard you were some type of junior Khan or somesuch, but if you're here, in person, then I be guessing you are deadly serious about ending this clusterfuck of a War. You've obviously got the juice to see your end of the bargain filled, and you're right, I aint Regular Military, but I got some stroke and favors I can call in to hold up the League's end. So you got yourself a deal Mister."

"However, I'll need at least forty-eight hours to arrange things, seventy-two'd be better. Some people are gonna be harder to contact than others, let alone getting them to agree to this deal, so the more time you can give me, the better. In the meantime, I'll have one of my officers start looking for a location to serve as our Circle, since I believe as the challenged I choose the place."

"Bargained well and done Kristen Marik, you have twenty-four hours," her heart sank when she heard that, "to inform all other League Military Forces within and outside the Star Adder Commonwealth to stay away from this world," she breathed a deep sigh of relief as the Clanner continued, "any that arrive will be fired upon without hesitation, without warning, and without waiting to find out their intent. After that, another twenty four to get all your messages sent, and forty eight for your replies. You have accepted what the Fates have set for you and I, you shall learn much in the years to come."

At that the link was severed, the look on her face matched the expression on those with her...none were sure precisely what he, Charlamagne Steiner, meant by that last comment.

------------------------------------------------------------

In less than half the allotted time, Kristen gets a reply to one of her messages, the one she sent to her brother, apparently he's been kept better informed than she thought as to what's happening on Minderoo.

The video he sent, a recording apparently of an address to the other Operational Commanders replays at the touch of a button:

"To all FWLM Commanders, Officers and Enlisted personnel, at long last the opportunity to end this War with Clan Star Adder has presented itself. The final outcome will be determined by a one-on-one Trial between Charlamagne Steiner and my sister Kristen Marik on the world of Minderoo."

"As Captain-General of the Free Worlds League, I agree to the terms and conditions, and hereby order all FWLM Commanders to cease all hostile actions within the initial borders of the Steiner Protectorate of the Star Adder Commonwealth States. Should any fail to heed this order, you and your entire unit shall be deemed traitor and pirate, with the full blessing and support of the Free Worlds League given to Clan Star Adder for your destruction."

"The ball is now in your hands Kristen, I wish you luck and fortune in your task. Regardless of the outcome, I expect to see you soon, and know this, you've made me proud every day. Thank you for your loyal service."

------------------------------------------------------------

......Kristen was thrown against the straps of her command couch as her 'Mech was rocked by several minor head blows from her right flank. Thankfully there weren't any breaches, and the adrenaline hogh she's riding mitigates the worst of the feedback she sustains, and judging from the pain in her mid- to lower-torso, she may have just cracked a rib from being tossed around like a ragdoll by King Kong's bigger and meaner brother. A quick side-step, along with a twist of her machine's torso, brings part of her weapon load to bear on the battered Highlander IIC preferred by Charlamagne, followed a split-second later by her response of megajoules of energy. One of the beams burns a scar into the earth just in front of her opponent, the other slags all but a fraction of the remaining armor shell on the 'Mech's left arm. The fireworks from that shot reveal that something vital had been burned as well, "Hopefully, it'll be that damn Gauss," she mutters, as an earlier hit from that weapon nearly took her left leg off....well, the foot anyways...she's been limping every since, being on par with Charlie's ride, and with his jumping ability, he has the edge overall on mobility.

Gritting her teeth, and wincing from the pain in her torso, actually it's lower than she initially thought, being in the lower right of her abdomen, she manages to get her machine repositioned and weapons locked before Charlie can move again. Her vision blurs as the sweat bursts from her pores as she unloads everything in a desparate, all-or-nothing, gamble. Seconds later, slapping the shut-down overrides as fast as they chirp their alarm at her, she witnesses that her haste wasn't more detrimental that helpful, only two weapons managed to land any hits on the hulking Highlander...a trio of LRM's on the pocked, yet still effective torso armor and a medium laser to the upper right arm, this time though, nothing other than armor was vaporized.

Cursing very proficiently, along with a prayer of thanks, as her 'Mech weathers the heat well enough without a shutdown, and avoids a catastrophic detonation of the stored ammo that would have shattered and spread her machine, along with her DNA, across several hundred square meters of landscape. The dampness, however, she's feeling on her abdomen, pelvis and thighs though worries her...apparently that last blow to her 'Mech's head must've sent some shrapnel into the cockpit. And the stinging-burning sensation from her insides, deep inside, a type of pain she's familar with, tells her cooling vest, while taking the brunt of the blow, wasn't wholly effective, suffering a severing or puncture to one, or more, of the cooling lines within.

Distracted by her thoughts, she barely was aware of Charlamagne's answer to her pathetic onslaught, his more calculated and patient....his right arm raised, and in line with her, the SRM launchers spitting their projectiles in a rippling volley. Charlie's luck, or skill, being stronger than her own, as not a single missile misses its mark...a half dozen shatter armor plates from her chest, two impact her left shoulder, and the final detonates against her already scarred head.

She screams from the feedback this time, or maybe its from the piercing agony in her gut as she's once more thrown forward against the restraining straps, "Yep, something is definitely wrong in there," she whimper-cries...that burning sensation constant, more intense and deeper than a few seconds ago. "Justonemore," she think-prays, "Just one more chance please," she says through clenched teeth, as she lines up for another shot at...nothing...Charlamagne had moved during her moment of inattention, "Dammit, where are you you fuckin' bastard," Kristen yells as a cold chill crawls up her spine, along with spreading, heightening warmth in her gut. She knows she doesn't have much time before she passes out, though if it'll be from blood loss or the heat...well, she wouldn't accept any wagers on which.

Amber lights, and the screeching alarm of a hostile target lock brings her back to semi-alertness, she tries juking her sluggish machine to one side, and while successful, it also puts her closer to her opponent, her instinct failing her this time. The viewscreen shows her all to vividly the Gauss Rifle of the Highlander steady and level, the electric blue glow from its coils pale, yet visible, sends her spirits and hopes plummeting...the milli-second brief glitter of the slug winks into and out of existence just before her 'Mech is hit with several hundred kilos of hyper-sonic metal slamming into the gut of her machine, armor plating splintering into a fine mist of pinky to hand sized flakes.

And the damage doesn't end there, the Gauss Slug found an area that had been savaged earlier, the armor that was left doesn't even slow the projectile, it drives deeper, just as the pain from her own injury burns into her body. The pinging, grinding and spasming of her 'Mech, felt more than heard, tells her that her Gyro is gone, just as the sudden jump in the engine's heat output being pumped into the cockpit evidence of its shielding being destroyed as well.

Kristen knows she's lost, and surprisingly she's ok with that....

".....been four month since we had to place her in a medical coma urKhan," a distant feminine voice says and continues, "The damage was severe, very severe. While the wound was small, it was deep and contaminated with coolant. A thin sliver of cockpit canopy had pierced her abdomen, going all the way through her lower torso. It punctured several lines front and back and acted as a conduit for the fluid into her body and bloodstrea....," the rest goes on unheard as she passes out once more from a new dose of drugs being pumped into her arm via the IV bag hanging above her......
