Kaumberg was simply a name on a starchart for some, but its name was also on the list of worlds being attacked by the Lyran Alliance.

Generalleutnant Felix Hasseldorf, Freiherr von Kaumberg, regarded his ancestral homeworld with a cold stare.

"Herr General," said the commander of his 'Mech regiment, Colonel Andrew Lennox, "All companies report ready for action. 'Mech Commanders are standing by to provide operational support and RCT Aero is at ready-30."

Hasseldorf nodded, "Hopefully the rebels and their Adder masters will live up to our expectations and roll over without a real fight, but lets not take any chances. Alert all commands to assume drop stations."



Warrior Caste Command Post, 10km outside Stuttgart

"...to return the rightful rule of the Archon and your lawfully ennobled Freiherren. What forces stand in insurrection against the power of the Archon?"

The assembled warriors of the 428th Couatl Sentinels groaned in displeasure as Hasseldorf's condescending batchall came to a close.

"You know our orders, warriors. We are to provide a token trial for the honor of the Commonwealth and the Clan, then fall back. We will swallow our pride this day and follow the strategy that has always prevailed against Lyran agression. Bid amongst yourselves and report to me what force shall defend the honor of the Star Adder."

Star Captain Roxanne was less than impressed by her leader's words, "Star Colonel Adam," she said - deliberately omitting his bloodname, "surely we can do better than running away like chastened dogs. You know the Watch reports - our strength is enough to seriously damage a Lyran regiment if we can concentrate our power. Bid our entire cluster and that green taubeschwein will surely lead his regiment against us. We may all fall, but if we destroy the 'elite'," she made the last word an epithet, "Donegal Guards, we will live on forever in glory!"

Adam Truscott was an old man, past his prime, but he still remember his ristar days enough to sympathize with his insubordinate Star Captain, "But what, Roxanne, of the citizens? Does Kaumberg truly need another massive battle to destroy its resources? If we take on the Guards 'Mech regiment, it will not be a set-piece battle on some distant desert plain. It will be weeks of Star- and Binary-level action all across the planet. You speak with a courageous soul and I honor you, but we are Sentinels - and it is our job to man the watchtowers and protect the people, to lure the enemy into the Adder's Lair so that when the time is right we can strike and destroy to invaders. We must follow the Strategy, for in doing so we will chasten the Falcon puppets and win our security for another generation."

Roxanne seemed unconvinced but replied quietly, "As you say, Star Colonel. I big Trinary Delta Assault for the honor of exterminating the Lyran pestilence."

Then, the bidding started in earnest.

"Well, gentlemen, there you have it. Frankly, my inclination is to crush them with a battalion to send them the message of who their masters are, but orders from Tharkad are to give them a fair fight, and that is what we will do. Colonel Lennox, assemble a trial detachment of your five best MechWarriors. Two companies from the infantry regiment's heavy weapons battalion will support you. Use your discretion as to how thoroughly you follow their quote-unquote code of honor."

"Jawohl," Lennox replied automatically, "With your leave I will assemble the trial force and brief their pilots now, Herr General."

"Granted, and pass my wishes of luck to your men," he said with a formal nod.

As Lennox swam for the hatch, Hasseldorf keyed the communicator, "Bridge, Hasseldorf. Record for transmission..."

OOC: Thanks to Raginar for taking the time to play this out with me in MegaMek! It was a lot of fun and had some pretty crazy results (like 4 ammo crits in a row on the Annihilator)
