As they floated past the scarcely populated Macintosh, the ship was running on silent, all sensors sweeping on the Fox Class ship. The system was dense with activity. Admiral Gant looked out the view port and remembered the cautionary tales of when pirates used to stage here prior to the Dark moving in. He wished he could be facing down them instead, but with no exact estimate to the Darks numbers or assets, the Brain Boys at the think tank were just guessing. His CAP was held close to the ship in case they had to leave fast. The way back was marked with breadcrumbs in the form of sensor buoys that would let him move to the jump point on the fly. These backwater worlds weren't known for having the most precise markings on their jump points. "Five thousand Kilometers to the mark Admiral." Gant went back to his seat. "Disengage active sensors before we hit the cloud."

The cloud referred to a ionic gas cloud that that bounced sensors back like Fog did light. It was all eyeballs and patience until they exited and could get eyes on Cambiano, the good news was, anyone inside or on the other side wouldn't see them coming either.

Many things were said about the Rough riders, but getting the job done without ruthless efficiency was not one of them. The Dark was prepared to make a stand at the Halas Canyon. On the first day, the mech company that was following nearly got eaten up trying to enter the canyon. By the time Colonel Wolfgang Hansen arrived and heard the story, him and the command staff spent a good half hour laughing their head off at the Dark.

The Colonel ordered the Battalion Commanders to recall their men to rearm with Thunder Munitions. By the end of the day, all three entrances to the Canyon had been mined to the teeth. The Dark Militia held fast to their positions, the next day, he personally took a ride out in a VTOL with a few of his commanders and they called in Artillery strikes on the Dark as they zipped past. With no where to go, the Dark huddled around like animals in a cage. Within 2 hours, the Dark Hunchback was scrap. Major Klein got credit for the kill, but there wasn't much left of it after Old Wolfgang was done with it. With the mech destroyed, they went back to base camp and let others go up.

The second night was the fireworks show, as the trapped warriors tried to risk the minefields as they deserted from their unit. The sky would flare up and seconds later tracer rounds would follow to that position, then the crews would go back to drinking beers. This continued for two more days until the word to move out was called. Even before the Minefields were detonated, Enforcers, Commandos and Kanga Hovercraft were jumping into the Canyon to put the few warriors that remained, out of their misery. The Colonel listed to the storied his men told, but nothing put a bigger smile on his face as when one of his corporals said "I can't believe they pay us for this." After losing his sky boys on Panpour, he needed his men's moral. It would get them thru the coming times. Sure it was a simple job, but the telling of a story like that, helped with the recruiting.
