Cannonshop

Dinh Pham reached up, and took down the UIW banner.

"You lost the base." Chief Carol said.

"I'm aware of that." Dinh told his NCOIC.

"you ordered them to break off." Carol said.

"I had to-those kids were getting slaughtered out there." Dinh said, "Badly, outclassed, outgunned, out-Talented, and their heads weren't in the fight."

"Your career's over." Carol predicted.

"Very likely." Dinh nodded, "Back in '69, I spent two months living in a crashtent on an asteroid after a blown recon on the Goliath Scorpions at Death of Adrian, That was more than twenty years ago-It is TIME for me to retire-and maybe THAT caused this too."

"You don't care-you're going to resign, aren't you?" Carol asked.

"I do care, which is why I must resign-I'll go back to what I was doing before the bad days, back to a singleship, prospecting maybe...I'm too old,and I failed too many times."

Base Infirmary

only three pilots from the UIW whose fighters were shot down actually made it to the infirmary-this is normal-usually a fighter's cocpit systems will eject a pilot before the reactor goes critical, or the airframe is destroyed, and in cases where it is 'tardy'...well, there usually isn't enough pilot to bother graves registration.

Michelle Karola's F-90 was a refitted 's' model that had been originally scrapped out by the LCAF before being repaired by a contractor in Ia Drang on Kowloon.  The work had been carefully done, but some of the life-support systems had been taken from former LCAF stocks-and had been manufactured (or, perhaps, mis-manufactured) by a division of Rowe-McClaren.  She never even made it to the combat zone, and before SAR teams reached her, she had second and third degree burns over 40% of her body.
The cockpit fire would have been worse, but the seals on her canopy failed.  The miracle that she was still alive was tempered by her being comatose from oxygen starvation and severe burn trauma.

Trong Tri Keuster's cockpit itself had been breached during the battle, she maintained enough control to begin slowing the fighter (Beast 6, another F-90) before a feedback knocked her unconscious.  the pressure-reactive 'crimps' in her suit joints meant that she would only lose her left leg and one of her hands-vacuum had destroyed the tissues where the flight-suit's integrity had failed while she was out.

Alin Wright would live-but he would never walk again-the combination of his Hellcat's death, and ejecting into debris, snapped his lower spine like a twig.  Razor-sharp shards of ferroglas finished the job, but he somehow survived long enough for recovery teams to find his suit beacon.

Most of the others did not make it-some were stupid, disabling their auto-ejection systems, others simply unlucky.

Out of 24 that went out, 3 came back crippled, six unscathed, the other twelve only as what could be found and recovered spinning burnt, smashed, and frozen in the darkness.
